Weinfurther paces Spiders at Columbia Classic

MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Richmond Spiders finished ninth at the Columbia Classic at Duran Golf Club Monday after recording a team score of 615 (+39) in the event, which was shortened to 36 holes after high winds canceled play Sunday. Richmond's Round 2 results were wiped clean despite each Spider playing as many as 15 holes Sunday after it was determined that high winds on the course had resulted in unplayable conditions. Rory Weinfurther, who ended the event with a team-best 151 (+7) Monday, recorded several birdies and an eagle Sunday and had been charging up the leaderboard when play was suspended and ultimately canceled.
"After playing 15 holes yesterday it was tough to have to stop and then have it not count considering we were doing really well as a team and being patient with the weather," said Weinfurther. "It definitely stinks to not have that eagle counted but I think we were all still happy with how we played and wanted to do it again today. In our minds it counted for sure."
The Spiders combined for a team score of 306 (+18) Monday, three strokes better than their 309 (+21) total in Round 1 Saturday. Weinfurther was Richmond's top finisher, tying for 33rd in the field of 80. She was one shot in front of senior Muskan Uppal, who tied for 36th at 152 (+8) in her first event of the season.
Freshman Hannah Lydic recorded Richmond's low round of the day Monday with a 1-over 73 and finished the event at 153 (+9), tied for 41st.
Sophomore Lauren Jones (tied for 60th at 159, +15) and freshman Olivia Wilkie (tied for 69th at 165, +21) rounded out the Richmond lineup.
"For the first tournament of the spring I think we put ourselves in a good position to improve for the rest of the season," said Weinfurther after the event. "We learned a lot about our game in different and hard weather conditions and have a lot of takeaways to work on before Charleston in a couple weeks."
Richmond will return to the course at the RiverTowne Invitational in Charleston, S.C. on February 26-28.
