Swimming and Diving Finishes Second at A-10 Championships

Geneva, Ohio— The University of Richmond swimming and diving team finished second overall at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Championships at the SPIRE Institute. Backed by five podium visits, the Spiders finished with 479.5 points.
On Wednesday, the Spiders made two trips to the podium when the 200 medley squad took the gold with a time of 1:39.30 which shattered the conference, pool, meet, and team record for the event (Katelyn Pennell, Sara Greene, Abby Fuller and Lauren Medlin) and when the 800 group took the bronze with a time of 7:21.48 (Caitlyn Hughes, Katie Chignell, Katelyn Pennell and Claire O'Shaughnessy).
Thursday brought two more podium visits for the Spiders. Abby Fuller showed off her speed in the 50 free as she took the silver with a time of 22.78. Julia Krichev, Abby Fuller, Lucy Yeomans and Lauren Medlin capped the day off with a third-place finish in the 200 free relay with a time of 1:31.91 to take the bronze for Richmond.
On Friday Katelyn Pennell took her personal best in the 100 back championships finals (54.28) to take the third-place finish and represent Richmond on the podium for the bronze.
There were no Spiders that made it to the podium on Saturday, but there were many strong races for the team:
Alexa Connors made her return to the 1650 free where she took fourth-place overall with a time of 16:52.74, missing out on a medal and third-place finish by only .03 of a second. Megan Carson won her heat to finish at 17:01.99, landing her at ninth-place. Natalie Stuart finished at 17:05.00 as she ended up in 10th place. Laura Davis won her heat as well with a time of 17:15.47, putting her at fifteenth place in the event.
Katelyn Pennell and Carstyn Klosterman earned their way into the 200 back championship finals through the preliminaries in the morning. They returned to take sixth and seventh place in the finals as Pennell finished at 1:57.65 and Klosterman at 1:58.14.
Abby Fuller and Lucy Yeomans competed in the 100 free for Richmond, taking seventh and eight place as Fuller finished at 51.13 and Yeomans at 51.26.
Sara Greene and Laura Davis participated in the consolation finals for the Spiders in the 200 breast. Greene took tenth place with a time of 2:16.91 as Davis took fifteenth place with a time of 2:21.13.
Senior Claire O'Shaughnessy barely missed out on the championship finals for the 200 fly as she took the top seed in the consolation finals. O'Shaughnessy fought hard to leave her mark with the program at her last A-10 Championships as she took first-place in the consolation finals with a time of 2:02.19, putting her at ninth overall in the conference for the event.
The 400 free relay group of Caitlyn Hughes, Lucy Yeomans, Claire O'Shaughnessy and Abby Fuller took fourth-place in a heartbreaker to end the meet. The group took first place in their heat with a time of 3:22.68. The time of the third-place winners was 3:22.61, as the Spiders missed out on a podium visit by .07 of a second.
The Spiders ended their A-10 Championship trip with 5 podium visits, multiple records broken, many new personal bests, 32 representations in event finals and second-place finish with a total of 479.5 points. Coming back from the 2022 season, they improved from last years spot at third-place in the conference.
