02/06/2023 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond swimming and diving team claimed the second highest GPA in all of Division I and has been named one of the Fall 2022 Scholar All-America teams, The College Swimming and Diving Association of America (CSCAA) announced on Thursday.
Teams were chosen based off of their Fall 2022 team grade point averages. 803 teams, and 19,426 student-athletes from 479 institutions were included in the decision process.Â
Richmond had the second highest GPA in Division I in the Fall (3.82). They trailed Marshall (3.83) by only .01, as the Thundering Herd had the highest GPA in the country. Harvard (3.79), UNC-Wilmington (3.77) and Brown (3.77) made up the rest of the top five in the country.Â
Here is what head coach Matt Barany had to say on the teams accomplishment:
"There is so much to this feat. This group arrived at Richmond with impressive academic resumes and the skills to succeed in the Richmond classroom. They have created relationships with professors, advisors, and mentors in Gottwald, the B-School, Â the Chaplaincy, and more. They are maximizing their time at Richmond all while training as successful Division I athletes."
Bruce Matthews, the University of Richmond's Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support & Student Services also made a statement on the teams success:
"No words can really capture the importance behind the team's academic accomplishments; such national recognition and academic rankings merely reflect the team's collective drive, determination, and discipline. These are amazing achievements."
The Spiders look to finish their season off strong in the classroom and the pool as they soon head to the A-10 Championships on Feb. 15 in Geneva, Ohio.Â
