Spiders Third After 36 Holes at Wexford Intercollegiate

HILTON HEAD, S.C. — With one round to play at the Wexford Intercollegiate, just two of the 18 teams in the field are in front of the Richmond Men's Golf team. The Spiders completed the first two rounds in a combined score of 10-over par (586), four shots behind South Carolina-Aiken and five behind host Francis Marion.
Richmond was led by sophomore Cole Ekert, who shot 68-74/142 (-2) and is tied for third among the 90 individuals on the leaderboard. Ekert recorded 10 birdies Monday, tied for second most of any golfer.
"It was mainly good putting today," said Ekert. "I had a good gauge for the speed of the greens and was able to roll in a few 15-20 footers. I think you also really need to keep the ball in play at Wexford. My swing wasn't necessarily dialed, but I managed my ball pretty well from tee-to-green."
Ekert is two shots in front of freshman Drew Carlin, who's at even par after back-to-back rounds of 72, tied for fifth. Carlin was 3-over par through five holes Monday morning before rallying to play his final 33 holes in 3-under par.
Michael Childress is tied for 15th at 2-over par, while a pair of Spiders are further back: senior Lou Baker is tied for 59th at 154 (+10) and junior Garrett Clark is tied for 85th at 163 (+19).
Richmond's 2-under 286 in Round 1 was five shots better than any other team Monday morning and the Spiders lowest team score since the season-opening VCU Shootout in September.
The Spiders will be fighting for their second podium finish of the season in Tuesday's final round. Richmond tied for third at Yale's MacDonald Cup in September.
"We had the lead today for quite a while, so we're clearly capable of winning," said Ekert. "I think the boys and I are happy to have a chance to win so early in the season, so tomorrow will be a good test, but also a lot of fun."
Tueday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:15 a.m.
