Spiders Jump to 7th on Final Day of Low Country Intercollegiate
03/19/2023 | Women's Golf
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. — With scores sailing sky high again at Moss Creek Golf Club, the Richmond Spiders Women's Golf team managed to make enough pars to move up to seventh place on the team leaderboard on the final day of the Low Country Intercollegiate Sunday. 24 hours after soggy fairways forced the cancelation (and subsequent rollback) of Round 2 after just five holes, Richmond shot a team score of 308 (+20) Sunday, a 20-stroke improvement from their effort in Friday's opening round. Only two teams in the field of 19 fared better than the Spiders in Round 2 as Richmond moved up five spots on the leaderboard and into a tie for seventh in the final standings at 636 (+60).
Rory Weinfurther braved the elements and some slick greens to pace the Spiders with a 73 (+1) in the final round, finish the event at 7-over par (151), tied for third among the 105 golfers competing.
"The conditions were especially tough yesterday with the rain and not being able to play the rest of our second round," said Weinfurther. "Wind and cold made it tough as well and the course was difficult. Greens were hard to hold and small which is something we aren't used to. Hitting different chips and focusing on course management this week was the biggest adjustment."
Weinfurther birdied her final two holes to snag a spot on the podium Sunday. This is her fifth career top-three finish and first since a runner-up result at last year's Patriot League Championship.
Muskan Uppal finished second among Spiders and tied for 23rd overall at 15-over par (159), two shots in front of Lauren Jones, who tied for 36th. Uppal was at her best on the par 3s at Moss Creek over the two rounds, leading all Spiders by playing them at 1-over par. Jones shone on the par 5s, playing them at even par, tied for second best in the field.
Hannah Lydic tied for 67th at 23-over par (167) and Vicky Zhu tied for 73rd at 25-over par (169).
Playing as an individual, Olivia Wlikie placed 27th at 16-over par (160), securing the first top-30 result of her freshman campaign. Wilkie's 21 pars were tied for 10th most in the field and helped keep her towards the top of the leaderboard on a day when an even-par 72 was the best round for any of the 105 golfers on the course.
"I think this was definitely a challenge and learning experience for us but very valuable going forward and in the next few weeks before conference," said Weinfurther. "It definitely tested our mental strength during the round but I enjoyed the course and had fun playing it today."
Richmond will be back in action in two weeks for the Ironwood Invitational at Ironwood Golf & Country Club in Greenville, N.C.
