Spiders Slip to 12th on Final Day of Tiger Invitational

AUBURN, Ala. — The Richmond Spiders Men's Golf team finished 12th in the 18-team field at the Tiger Invitational Tuesday, carding a team score of 12-over par (300) to finish the event with a three-round total of 878, 14 strokes over par.
Senior Ben Cooper was Richmond's low finisher at 1-under (215), tied for 20th among the 90 individuals in the field. It was Cooper's sixth career top-20 result and second this season following his 10th-place finish at the season-opening VCU Shootout. Cooper made 15 birdies over the three rounds at the Grand National Lake Course, one shy of the most of any player in the event.
Senior Michael Childress led Richmond with a 1-over 73 Tuesday, finishing the event tied for 28th at 217 (+1). Childress played the par 4s at 1-under par over the three rounds, tied for fifth-best in the field.
Freshman Drew Carlin tied for 47th at 221 (+5), and sophomore Cole Ekert tied for 69th at 226 (+10). Senior Lou Baker placed 90th at 239 (+23).
The Spiders were able to find birdies at Grand National, carding a combined 49 during the event, tied for 7th most in the field. But Richmond managed just 142 pars over the three days, second-fewest of any team.
Richmond will return to action Thursday with Round 1 of the Sea Palms Invitational at Sea Palms Resort in St. Simons Island, Ga.
