Four Spiders Earn Postseason Honors; Jaffe Named A-10 Rookie of Year

RICHMOND, Va. – Richmond third baseman Jordan Jaffe was named the 2023 Atlantic 10 Conference Rookie of the Year, as selected by the league's coaches, the organization announced Wednesday.
Jaffe is the fourth Spider to receive the honor in program history and the first since outfielder Tanner Stanley in 2013. Jaffe also collected A-10 First Team and Rookie Team accolades.
Outfielder Johnny Hipsman and second baseman Jared Sprague-Lott were named to the All-A-10 Second Team. Outfielder Alden Mathes joined Hipsman and Sprague-Lott on the All-Academic team.
In 48 starts for UR, Jaffe ranked among the top-10 in the league in RBI (2nd, 58), doubles (3rd, 20), home runs (t6th, 12) and slugging percentage (6th, .622) and finished the regular season with a .321 batting average. Defensively, he only committed six errors, making 25 put outs with 67 assists for a .939 fielding percentage. Jaffe put together a ten-game hit streak, April 8-23, logging hits at UVA, GW, UMass, Towson and Fordham. In 23 league games, he was third in home runs (9), RBI (34), slugging percentage (.730), tied for fifth in doubles (9), tied for seventh in runs scored (27) eighth in OPS (1.144) and ninth in hits (35).
Hipsman a fifth-year Spider outfielder, finished the regular season ranked in the A-10 top-five in doubles (t1st, 24), hits (t2nd, 80), slugging percentage (2nd, .650), OPS (3rd, 1.078) and average (5th, .374) while logging 53 RBI in 214 at bats. He went 4-for-4 with a home run to help the Spiders defeat West Virginia earning A-10 Player of the Week honors and collected a hit against nationally ranked Virginia. In 24 A-10 games, Hipsman led the league in doubles (14) and hits (43), ranked second in RBI (36), slugging (.762) and OPS (1.221), ranked third in at bats (105) and ranked fifth in batting average (.410). His 24 doubles ranks eighth nationally.
Sprague-Lott shifted from short to second base in mid-March and took over as the lead-off man to start A-10 action for Richmond. He finished among the top-10 in the league in walks (3rd, 42), home runs (t-4th, 13), runs scored (4th, 58), OPS (4th, 1.26) and slugging (8th, .615). He opened the season with a solo home run at Alabama as he collected 20 multi-hit games. He was also named to the College Sports Communicators Academic All-District Team earlier this month.
Collecting A-10 All-Academic honors Mathes was named to the CSC Academic All-District team earlier this month after graduating with a business degree with a concentration on finance and marketing. Mathes finished the regular season with 13 doubles, eight home runs, including a grand slam, 57 hits, 34 walks, 16 hit by pitches and 38 RBI for a .298 average. He also stole 11 bases in 12 attempts. Mathes made nine appearances on the mound, collecting 18 strikeouts in 11.1 innings with three saves.
