06/29/2023 | Women's Swimming & Diving
Richmond, Va. - The University of Richmond swimming and diving program has been selected as a Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Coaches Association of America (CSCAA). The Spiders posted a GPA of 3.84 in the spring 2023 semester to earn the honor. Richmond had the second highest GPA in Division I in the spring (3.84). They trailed top-ranked Marshall (3.87) by only .03.
Teams were chosen based off of their spring 2023 team grade point averages. 803 teams, and 19,426 student-athletes from 479 institutions were included in the decision process.Â
Earlier in the year, the Spiders had the second highest GPA in Division I in the fall (3.82), improving their overall team GPA to 3.84 in the spring after a runner-up finish at the 2023 Atlantic 10 Championships in February.Â
Here is what head coach Matt Barany had to say on the teams accomplishment:
This accomplishment takes serious dedication. These women are great students, athletes, and teammates. They work hard, sleep well, and support each other. Their accomplishment serves as an example for so many. It should be celebrated! I am lucky to coach them at Richmond".
Bruce Matthews, the University of Richmond's Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support & Student Services also made a statement on the teams success:
"What our swim and dive team has achieved in the classroom is quite exceptional. But that is just the outcome for a group of student-athletes who work hard, care about each other, and settle for nothing less than their best effort. Again, they are all quite exceptional".
The 2023-2024 Spiders are ready to jump back into the classroom and pool as they look to continue their academic and athletic excellence.Â
