RICHMOND, Va. — 2023 graduate Arden Tierney, who led Spider Women's Lacrosse to an Atlantic 10 Championship and the program's first NCAA Tournament win this past season, is Richmond's nominee for NCAA Woman of the Year, UR announced Wednesday.
Tierney graduated summa cum laude from the Robins School of Business in May with a concentration in Marketing. She was named the School's Outstanding Marketing Student and won Robins' Business Scholar-Athlete of the Year Award. During her career, Tierney was named to the A-10's All-Academic Team three times and earned Academic All-State honors from the Virginia Association of Sports Information Directors (VaSID) three times.
Tierney leaves Richmond as one of the most decorated student-athletes in the history of Spider Women's Lacrosse. She is sixth on UR's career scoring list with 239 points and tied for second all-time with 104 assists while owning the program's draw controls record with 405. Her most prolific season was in 2023, when she totaled 94 points — the second most in a season in program history — en route to earning All-American honors from the IWLCA, USA Lacrosse Magazine, and Inside Lacrosse and being named the A-10 Co-Offensive Player of the Year.
On May 7, Tierney led Richmond to a win vs top-seed UMass in the Atlantic 10 title game, scoring three times. Five days later, she scored three more times as the Spiders beat Marquette in the first round of the NCAA Championship, securing the first NCAA Tournament win in program history.
Off the field, Tierney was a leading voice for mental health awareness on the Richmond campus. She served as the Mental Health Liaison for UR's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and was the President of the Richmond Chapter for Morgan's Message, a non-profit that strives to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community.
This upcoming season, Tierney will use her additional year of COVID-19 eligibility at the University of Notre Dame, where she is pursuing a Master's degree in Management.
Tierney is part of a group of 17 nominees from Atlantic 10 institutions. The league's Senior Woman Administrators will vote on the nominees to select two student-athletes who will be named A-10 Woman of the Year and represent the Atlantic 10 Conference as 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year conference finalists. The 2023 NCAA Woman of the Year, as voted on by the Woman of the Year selection committee, will be announced this fall.
One of the most prestigious NCAA awards, the NCAA established the Woman of the Year Award in 1991 to celebrate the achievements of women in intercollegiate athletics. Now in its 33rd year, the NCAA Woman of the Year award honors graduating female college athletes who have exhausted their eligibility and distinguished themselves in academics, athletics, service and leadership throughout their collegiate careers.
