NORTHBOROUGH, MASS. – Senior Arden Tierney has become the first-ever University of Richmond women's lacrosse and Atlantic 10 conference player to earn the IWLCA Scholar-Athlete of the Year award, as announced by the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Thursday.
"Arden is the epitome of a student-athlete. She works extremely hard in both areas in order to do her best. Arden had an extraordinary year with her accomplishments on and off the field while also serving as a leader for our program," head coach Anne Harrington said. "We are all so proud of her and know that this award was hard earned and well deserved."
Graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors, the three-time Atlantic 10 All-Academic member earned her degree in business administration with a concentration in marketing. Tierney was also named the 2023 Robins School of Business Scholar-Athlete of the Year and a member of the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Academic All-District squad.
While maintaining a strong academic presence on campus, Tierney played a strong role on the offensive side of the field for the Spiders. Her performance accolades stacked up as she finished as the Atlantic 10 Offensive Player of the Year, an NCAA Woman of the Year nominee, IWLCA All-American, USA Lacrosse Magazine All-American, Inside Lacrosse All-American, Atlantic 10 First Team All Conference attack, Atlantic 10 All-Tournament honoree and IWLCA South Region Second Team member.
The 2023 team captain concluded her career as the program record holder for career draw controls (405), single season draw controls (189) and single game draw controls (17). In three other categories, she holds the No. 2 record spots - single season points (94), single season assists (44) and career assists (104). Her career statistics finalized at 239 points, 135 goals, 104 assists, 405 draw controls and 42 ground balls. Tierney was a key member of the 2023 Richmond squad that took the conference title against and broke the history books with the Spiders first ever NCAA Tournament victory (Round 1 vs. Marquette).
"I am so honored and appreciative to receive this honor from the IWLCA," Tierney said. "This award speaks to the culture we have built in Richmond, which emphasizes excellence both on the field and in the classroom. I am grateful to have been surrounded by faculty, coaches, teammates, and parents who have given me resources and support to succeed in athletics and academics. I'm so glad to have been a part of a history making team and am excited for what the future holds for Richmond Women's Lacrosse!"
