Big Second Half Spurs Spider Hockey to Victory

DAVIS, CA – The University of Richmond field hockey team came from behind to defeat University of California at Davis, 2-1, Sunday at Aggie Field Hockey Facility.
Richmond, now 3-3 on the season, is back in action Friday Sept. 15, when the squad heads to North Carolina to take open Atlantic 10 action against Davidson at 7 PM. The Spiders take on Queens University Sunday, Sept. 17 at noon.
UC Davis got on the board first, converting a penalty corner in the 7th minute of action.
The Spiders fired off seven shots and earned three corners in the first half but were unable to score.
UR picked up the pressure on the UC Davis to start the second half. In the 43rd minute, Avery Russell put in her first collegiate goal to tie the game, getting a quick shovel pass from Alexandria Lavelle right in front of the Aggie goalkeeper.
Continuing to press in the fourth quarter, Cori Nichols tallied the game-winner for her first goal of the season in the 52nd minute on the Spiders eighth penalty corner of the game. Alexa Derr and Kaitlyn Csensits both picked up assists on the goal, serving as the insert and stick stopper, respectively.
The Spiders finished with 15 shots with nine on goal while holding the Aggies to 11 shots and seven on goal. Richmond also held the advantage in penalty corners, 9-6.
