DAVIDSON, N.C. – The University of Richmond Field Hockey kicked off the Atlantic 10 Conference season with a 3-2 overtime victory over Davidson College Friday night at Belk Turf Field. The win marks the Spiders ninth-straight victory over the Wildcats in program history.
The Spiders move to 4-3 on the season and 1-0 in A-10 play. UR is back in action Sunday, taking on second-year NCAA Division I program Queens University of Charlotte at noon.
Alexa Derr found the back of the cage for her first collegiate goal, converting the Spiders 11th penalty corner of the contest in the 64th minute of action. With a two-person advantage on the field due to yellow cards, Alexandria Lavelle started the corner, found Derr across the circle. Derr juked the Wildcat defender and put it in the lower right corner for the win.
After a scoreless first 15 minutes of action, Davidson got on the board quickly in the second quarter. Lavelle tallied her second goal of the season, converting a penalty stroke in the 27th minute to tie the game.
Richmond took a 2-1 lead in the third quarter when Charly Faherty collected her second goal of the season in the 36th minute. Faherty didn't give up on the corner play, putting in a quick pass from Jess McMeeking.
Davidson tallied a goal in the 47th minute to tie the game at 2-all. Both squads tallied two shots and two corners in the final 13 minutes of action but neither defense allowed goal.
