STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Sophomore Hannah Lydic placed second at Penn State's Nittany Lion Invitational, shooting a 2-under 70 in Sunday's final round to finish the event at 4-under par, the second-best tournament score in Richmond program history. Lydic finished two shots behind medalist Madison Smithco from Youngstown State to record her second straight runner-up finish in this event, held on Penn State's Blue Course.
"I think my distance off the tee really gave me an edge out here," said Lydic. "I was able to have a wedge in on most holes which made it easy for me to attack pins. Just like Coach [Calle Barlow] preaches to us, I had to stay patient and focus on the process and not the outcome. Executing that message made all the difference this weekend."
Lydic opened the event with 1-over 73 Saturday morning before firing a 3-under 69 in Round 2 Saturday afternoon. Her 4-under total for the event is behind only her own score of 11-under at the 2022 William & Mary Fall Invitational on the list of lowest tournament scores in Richmond history. Lydic now owns the three lowest 54-hole scores in program history.
As a team, the Spiders placed fifth in the 10-team event at 31-over par (895). UR climbed into the top half of the leaderboard on the strength of a team score even-par (288) in the second round Saturday afternoon, the fourth-lowest single-round team score in program history.
Senior Rory Weinfurther played her final 36 holes in 2-under par to finish the event tied for sixth at 3-over par (219) and secure her 10th career top-10 finish.
Freshman Maya Beasley tied for 18th at 10-over par (226), registering her first career top-20 result. Sophomore Olivia Wilkie tied for 42nd at 20-over par (236), two shots in front of junior Lauren Jones, who placed 46th. Junior Christine Mandile finished at 28-over par (244), placing 52nd.
"It was really great to see us with lowest round of the afternoon yesterday," said Coach Calle Barlow, speaking of UR's even-par 288 in Round 2. "There were so many positives again to take away. Putting ourself in position to be a factor down the stretch is the first thing we need to do and we did that."
Richmond will return to action on October 9-10 at the UNCG Fall Invitational at Forest Oaks Country Club in Greensboro, N.C.
