Women’s Basketball Announces Atlantic 10 Schedule
09/19/2023 | Women's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. – The Atlantic 10 announced the full 2023-24 conference slate for the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team on Tuesday, highlighted by nine games inside the Robins Center. Combined with the non-conference slate, the Spiders will have five additional home games this season. Five of the home games for Richmond will fall on a Saturday.
The Spiders will open the conference slate at George Washington on Dec. 30, before the conference home opener against crosstown rival VCU to ring in the new year on Jan. 3.
Richmond will travel up to Philadelphia for a game against Saint Joseph's on Jan. 6 before hosting a two-game redemption tour against UMass on Jan. 10 and on CBSSN against Rhode Island on Jan. 14.
Last season, the Spiders fell to UMass on the road in the regular season, and again in the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinal where the Minutewomen were the No. 1 seed in the tournament. The Spiders also took on the Rams twice last season on the road, falling to URI in the regular season and in the WNIT second round to conclude the 2022-23 season.
After a midweek game at Davidson on Jan. 17, the Spiders will host Dayton on Jan. 20 inside the Robins Center. Four days later, the Spiders will take on Duquesne in Pittsburgh, Pa., and then will travel to defending A-10 Champions, the Saint Louis Billikens, on Jan. 28 to round out January.
The Spiders will open February against Fordham on Feb. 3 at home before traveling to Rhode Island for the second matchup of the season against the Rams on Feb. 7. George Washington will come to the Robins Center on Feb. 11, while the Spiders will have another go around at VCU on Valentine's Day.
Loyola Chicago will take a trip to Richmond for the first time since joining the A-10 on Saturday, Feb. 17, before La Salle travels down on Feb. 21. The Spiders will then travel to Fairfax, Va. on Feb. 24 to take on George Mason and will round out the regular season home slate on Feb. 28 against Duquesne before closing out the regular season at St. Bonaventure on March 2.
"This is an incredibly tough schedule, but that is exactly what we want for this group," Head Coach Aaron Roussell said. "Our team wants to be challenged and this slate will provide that. VCU is always a tough rivalry game that bring a lot of emotion and a high level of difficulty. It's been a while since we have beaten VCU at home, and it will be a goal of ours to end that streak this season."
"In addition, we feel Duquesne, George Washington and Rhode Island will also be three of the top teams in our league this year," Roussell continued. "It will also be a great litmus test to get UMass and Rhode Island in the Robins Center early as those teams each beat us in postseason play last year and our players will be eager for those games."
Roussell returns all five starters and a plethora of core talent to the roster this season, including seniors Addie Budnik, Grace Townsend, Siobhan Ryan and Kylee Lewandowski. Also back this season are junior Katie Hill and sophomores Rachel Ullstrom, Maggie Doogan, Torin Rogers and Jada Green.
New to the roster this year are graduate transfers Laren VanArsdale and Faye Parker. Anna Camden, a transfer from Penn State, suffered a season-ending injury over the summer. Freshmen Ally Sweeney, Melissa Mwanza and Courtney Swider will look to begin their collegiate careers this season.
The Spiders finished the 2022-23 season with a 21-11 record and an 8-6 record in conference play. The team finished with a 10-3 mark inside the Robins Center last season with the only losses coming from Duke, George Washington and VCU.
Tip-off times and full TV broadcast information for all Richmond games will be updated on RichmondSpiders.com as it becomes available. Home games and Atlantic 10 games not shown on national television will be streamed on ESPN+ as part of the Atlantic 10's digital rights agreement.
