Women’s Tennis Announces 2023 Fall Schedule
09/08/2023 | Women's Tennis
RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond Women's Tennis team unveiled its 2023 fall slate on Friday, highlighted by two trips to Liberty, and the River City Tennis Open Oct. 6-8.
"This fall schedule will be a little different than previous seasons," Head Coach Jacob Dunbar said. "I think we only have one repeat fall event from last year, so we will have a chance to see some different opponents. All of our players will be traveling this fall, so our hope is to establish the team environment from the get-go."
The Spiders will open the fall slate Sept. 16-17 at the ITA Hall of Fame Classic in Williamsburg, Va. (William & Mary), before the UNCG Hidden Dual Sept. 29-Oct. 1 in Greensboro, N.C. Richmond will then host the River City Tennis Open on Oct. 6-8 at the Westhampton Tennis Complex. The first trip to Lynchburg, Va. for the team Is slated for Oct. 19-23 for the ITA Regionals and on Oct. 19-23, the Spiders will take on Liberty for the Liberty Hidden Dual on the road.
"I'm really excited to add the women's side to the River City Tennis Open this year," Dunbar said. "Having a home event in the fall is great not just for our team, but for the local Richmond and university communities. We look forward to hosting and getting to see lots of our local supporters out that we often don't get to see until the spring."
Dunbar returns seven core players to the roster this year including seniors Andrea Campodonico, Carly Cohen, Leonor Oliveira and Polina Shitikova. In addition, redshirt junior Claire Le Du returns to the team as well as sophomores Lara Bakhaya and Elizabeth Novak. Two new faces, freshmen Lainey O'Neil (Lake Forest, Ill.) and Lucy Webber (London, England) join the team this season.
Last season, the Spiders finished with a 10-15 overall record, 3-2 in Atlantic 10 action, and defeated No. 13 Saint Joseph's and No. 5 George Washington in the Atlantic 10 Championship before narrowly falling to No. 1 VCU in the semifinal match, 3-2.
"With the core part of our team returning we have a great opportunity to take the lessons learned last season, add some new talent and charge ahead," Dunbar said. "I think it took us some time last year to find our identity as a team, but by the end we were really clicking as a unit. Being able to kick off this year directly from there will give us a great chance to be very successful this year. With 5 seniors, I'm excited to see them really take the lead and supply the energy for the rest of the group."
