King Scores 32 to Keep Spiders Unbeaten in A-10

RICHMOND, Va. — Guard Jordan King exploded for 32 points to lead the Spiders to an 82-74 win over George Washington Wednesday at the Robins Center. Richmond improved to 14-5 overall and 6-0 in the Atlantic 10 for the first time since joining the conference in 2001.
23 of King's points came during a 14-minute stretch when Richmond turned a 12-point deficit into a 12-point lead, outscoring GW 43-19 over the final three minutes of the first half and the first 11 minutes of the second half.
King registered his third 30-point game of the season, the most by a Spider since ShawnDre' Jones in 2016-17. He was 4-6 from three-point range as Richmond shot 12-23 from deep, its second most three-pointers in a game this year.
"When he makes those shots, it just really builds everybody's confidence," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "I think we got down as much as 12 in the first half so when you can make shots you're chipping into [the lead] and that energizes you on defense."
Richmond held George Washington, which entered the game with the leading offense in the A-10, to just 27-72 (37.5 percent) from the field. James Bishop, the conference's fifth-leading scorer entering the game, finished 4-18 on field goals and 2-8 from three-point range.
"They're so difficult to defend. You have to pay so much special attention to Bishop," said Mooney. "He's so good. He's so crafty. He's almost always going downhill, and he has such great change of pace. From that perspective, we did a very good job defensively."
The Spiders have won nine straight games, their longest win streak since winning nine in a row as they won the A-10 championship and advanced the Sweet 16 in 2011. UR is now 10-0 at home this season, the first time in program history the team has won 10 straight home games in a single season.
Isaiah Bigelow added a season-high 20 points for the Spiders and eight rebounds. He sent the crowd to its feet with a massive block on a Bishop layup attempt in the final seconds.
"There's a reason we're 10-0 [at home]," said Bigelow. "The crowd is unbelievable."
DeLonnie Hunt added 12 points, his most since undergoing wrist surgery in late November and missing 10 games. Neal Quinn scored 11 points and a recorded a team-high nine rebounds for UR.
Richmond is 6-0 in conference play for the first time since the 1988-89 season, when UR won its first eight conference games as a member of the CAA. Wednesday's win was UR's seventh in its last eight meetings with George Washington.
Next up for the Spiders is a matchup against 16th-ranked Dayton Saturday at 6 PM at the Robins Center. The game, which is sold-out, will be nationally televised on CBS Sports Network.
Both teams are 6-0 in the Atlantic 10. Dayton's 13 straight wins are the longest active win streak in the nation, while UR's nine straight victories are tied for third longest.
"We need to embrace the moment," said Mooney. "It will be a sold-out crowd and a nationally televised crowd — embrace that. For many, many years, Richmond has performed well given these opportunities. This is the reason Richmond wanted to have our players here and the reason that they choose Richmond: there are games and opportunities like this."
