Spiders Roll Past Saint Louis Sunday Afternoon

SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Behind Addie Budnik's 16th career game with 20 or more points, the University of Richmond Women's Basketball team got back to winning fashion and defeated defending A-10 Champion Saint Louis on the road 72-61 Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Spiders improved to 18-4 overall and 8-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Billikens fell to 8-13 and 3-5 in conference play.

How it Happened
Addie Budnik came out of the gate on fire, netting the first seven points for the Spiders for a 7-4 UR lead. Saint Louis brought the game back within one, 7-6 off a layup, but a triple from Siobhan Ryan put the Spiders ahead by four, 10-6 with 4:35 left on the clock. After a pair of free throws from the opposition, Ryan posted a layup and Grace Townsend put up a free throw for a five-point Richmond lead, 13-8. After SLU tied the game at 13, Rachel Ullstrom netted a triple, but the Billikens responded with a trey on the other coast to end the first quarter deadlocked at 16.
Ullstrom opened the second 10 minutes with a triple, and Budnik followed the play with another trey for a 22-17 Richmond lead. Maggie Doogan then posted three points to push the Spider lead to eight, 25-17. The Billikens then got a quick layup off before Townsend netted back-to-back free throws to preserve the eight-point lead, 27-19 with 4:47 left in the half. After Doogan recorded a pair of free throws, SLU went on a 7-0 run to send Richmond into the locker room with a three-point advantage, 29-26.
The Billikens brought the game back within one, 29-28 off a second-chance layup, before Budnik completed a hoop-and-harm for a 32-28 Richmond lead. Townsend then pushed the lead to 35-30, but a second-chance free throw from SLU cut the UR lead to 35-31. A trey from Budnik sparked a 6-0 run for the Spiders to go ahead 41-31. Townsend then sparked another 7-0 spurt for UR for a 48-33 Spider lead, but SLU ended the scoring drought with a jumper. After the Billikens chipped away at the lead, 51-40, Doogan got one final free throw off to head into the final 10 minutes with Richmond ahead 52-40.
Budnik opened the fourth quarter with a layup, and Townsend followed the play with a layup for a 56-40 Spider lead. After exchanging points, Ullstrom netted a triple to push the Spider lead to 17, 61-44. The Billikens were able to get a layup off, but Ullstrom again responded on the other coast with a layup of her own to preserve the lead, 63-46. SLU was able to go on a 7-0 run to cut the Richmond lead to 63-53, before Budnik and Ullstrom combined for three points for a 66-53 lead. Richmond posted six free throws at the charity stripe to finish the game and take the win 72-61.
