MONTERREY, MEXICO — Midway through the Monterrey Collegiate Classic, the Richmond Spiders are in prime position. After 27 holes at Club Campestre, Richmond is 11-under par, two shots behind Loyola Maryland and in front of the other 10 teams in the field. The tournament will conclude with 27 holes on Saturday.
Senior Cole Ekert led the Spiders on Day 1, opening with a 3-under 69 and playing the first nine holes of his second round in 3-under par, including an eagle on the par-5 18th, his final hole of the day.
"The hole is pretty tight off the tee, but definitely rewards a good tee ball with a shorter approach in. I was able to hit the fairway and had about a 190-yard shot up the hill to the green," said Ekert. "I hit a solid iron a little long left of the pin to about 35 feet. I had the putt about a foot out right and just let it swing in there. All the guys were watching behind the green and we got to celebrate together a bit, so it was a great way to end the day."
At 6-under par, Ekert is tied for fourth among the 73 golfers on the leaderboard.
Freshman Carson Baez is tied for 11th at 3-under par. Baez played the first nine holes of his second round 3-under par after shooting an even-par 72 in Round 1 Friday morning.
Senior Patrick Isztwan and junior Drew Carlin are among a group of four golfers tied for 23rd at 1-under par. Freshman Tommy Sharps is tied for 68th at 8-over par in his college debut, and sophomore Jack LaPiana, competing as an individual, is tied for 52nd at 4-over par.
Richmond will resume Round 2 Saturday at 9:20 AM.
"We're in a great spot going into tomorrow," added Ekert. "We need to bring our best to finish the job!"
