Richmond Tops Fairfield Behind Ullstrom and Doogan

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Behind a combined 32 points from Maggie Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom, the University of Richmond women's basketball team picked up a commanding 62-39 win over Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference preseason favorite Fairfield Tuesday night on the road. With the win, the Spiders pick up the first win over the Stags since 2017 and move to 3-0 on the year while Fairfield fell to 1-1.

How it Happened
After the Stags put up an early free throw, the Spiders hit an offensive rhythm, posting a 10-0 run from efforts by Ally Sweeney and Doogan. After Fairfield posted a layup, Addie Budnik was quick to respond on the other coast with a triple, sparking a 9-0 run to give the Spiders a dominating 19-3 advantage heading into the second quarter.
Ullstrom opened the second quarter with a pair of triples for a 25-5 Spider lead. The Stags were able to get another jumper off with 3:04 left in the half but a triple from Doogan sparked a 7-0 run to send UR into the locker room with a convincing 32-7 lead.
Out of the break, the Stags were able to cut the Spider lead to 20, 34-14 before Doogan ended the run with a layup. Ullstrom followed the play with a jumper of her own to rebuild the lead back to 26, 40-14. After Fairfield again cut the deficit to 20, Alyssa Jimenez posted two free throws to send Richmond into the final 10 minutes ahead 47-25.
Fairfield was able to scratch back to 21, 53-32 to open the fourth quarter before Ullstrom posted a layup to end the drought. After exchanging a few points, a pair of free throws from Doogan and an easy bucket from Sam Dewey pushed the Spiders to 62-37. Fairfield was able to get one final jumper off, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders handed Fairfield a 62-39 loss.
Notes on the Game
The Spiders return home to play host to Gardner-Webb on Nov. 15 at 11 a.m. for the education game before welcoming William & Mary to the Robins Center on Nov. 21 at 6 p.m. for a mid-week matchup against the Tribe.

Notes on the Game
- The Spiders were led by Ullstrom, who posted 17 points on 6-11 from the field, 3-6 from deep and went 2-2 at the charity stripe while Doogan was the second Spider in double figures, ending the contest with 15 points.
- Ullstrom also posted her career-first double-double with a career-high 11 rebounds to lead the Spiders. Her double-double is the first for the Spiders since 11/15/23 against Gardner-Webb (Doogan, 25 pts, 10 rebs)
- Sweeney dished out a team-high five assists.
- Richmond held Fairfield to its lowest number of points since 3/4/23 vs Quinnipiac (39).
- As a team, the Spiders shot 21 of 35 (38.9%) from the floor, 7 of 22 (31.8%) from deep and 13 of 14 (92.9%) from the charity stripe. In addition, the Spiders posted 39 rebounds, 11 offensive, 15 assists, three blocks, 13 thefts and 21 points off 24 Fairfield turnovers.
