RICHMOND, Va. — The University of Richmond women's basketball team claimed the No. 19 spot in the first NCAA Evaluation Tool (NET) rankings of the season, the best among Atlantic 10 Conference teams, and received a program-best 13 votes in the Associated Press (AP) Top 25 Poll this week. The Spiders join Saint Joseph's (40) and George Mason (45) as the only A-10 teams in the top 50 NET Rankings.
The NET (NCAA Evaluation Tool) was introduced before the 2018-19 season, replacing the RPI as the primary sorting tool for the NCAA tournament selection committee. The NET considers game results, strength of schedule, game location, scoring margin, net offensive and defensive efficiency, and the quality of wins and losses when determining rankings. The rankings are available on the NCAA Website.
The Spiders have stormed to an 8-0 start and capped off a stellar Thanksgiving weekend with two impressive victories at the Daytona Beach Classic. Richmond defeated Oakland 76-49 on Friday behind a dominant 35-point performance from Rachel Ullstrom and followed up with a gritty 57-53 win over Big 12 Conference member Oklahoma State on Saturday, powered by Ullstrom's 9-point, 7-rebound effort and Maggie Doogan's 22 points.
The Richmond offense has averaged 76.8 points per game while limiting opponents to just 50.5 points, good for ninth nationally in scoring defense. The team has shot nearly 50 percent from the field to lead the A-10 conference and 12th nationally. Ullstrom has led the way for Richmond this season, averaging 16.8 points per game on 55.3 percent shooting, including 43.1 percent from three-point range. She is complemented by Doogan, who has added 13.6 points and a team-high 6.1 rebounds per game.
The Spiders are back in action inside the Robins Center on Wednesday, as the team plays host to Georgetown at 6 p.m. before taking on Columbia on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. Tickets for the game against Columbia can be found here.
