DADE CITY, Fla. — The Richmond Spiders men's golf team cruised past Central Michigan in the quarterfinals before falling to Eastern Michigan in the semifinals of the inaugural Atlantic 10-MAC Match Play event Monday.
The event, being played on the south course of the La Jovita Golf & Country Club, is Richmond's first since last October. The Spiders showed no signs of rust against Central Michigan Monday morning, defeating the Chippewas 5 ½ to ½. Freshmen Jack LaPiana and Quin Polin posted 5&4 wins, while junior Patrick Isztwan won 5&3. Two more Spiders, Lou Baker and Drew Carlin, won 1UP, while Cole Ekert halved his match.
The win earned the second-seeded Spiders a matchup against third-seeded Eastern Michigan in the semifinals Monday afternoon. Isztwan was the only Spider to win a full point, as he won 5&3 for a second straight match. Carlin managed a half-point in his match against EMU's Patrick Deardorff, but no other Spiders were able to score as Eastern Michigan advanced 4 ½ to 1 ½.
"I love match play," said Isztwan, the only Spider to earn a pair of points Monday. "I get to play a lot of it back home, so I'm used to it. I was able to avoid big mistakes which kept me in every hole which takes some stress off."
Richmond will face A-10 rival George Washington in the third-place match Tuesday morning, starting at 8:30 AM.
"I think it's a great opportunity for us to see how we stack up," said Isztwan. "If all goes well it can be something to build on going forward."
