DADE CITY, Fla. — The Richmond Spiders first four golfers all won their matches Tuesday morning vs George Washington, sending the Spiders to a third-place finish in the inaugural Atlantic 10-MAC Match Play at La Jovita Golf & Country Club. Cole Ekert (4&3), Lou Baker (5&3), Patrick Isztwan (2UP), and Drew Carlin (3&2) all won their matches as the Spiders defeated their A-10 rivals 4 to 2 in the third-place match.
"The guys stepped up and took care of their business today," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "Anytime you can get a win against a conference team is great for the confidence as you move through the season."
For Isztwan, it was his third win in as many matches over the last two days after winning his match against both Central Michigan and Eastern Michigan on Monday. "I'm really proud of Patrick," said Decker. "Going 3-0 this week was awesome and a great way for him to start the spring."
All six Spiders earned at least one full point over Richmond's three matches at the event, but it was the middle of the lineup that paced Richmond as Isztwan (3 points) and Carlin (2.5 points) both went unbeaten.
"I thought the guys did really well with the match play format. We played some inter-squad matches at home before heading down so hopefully that helped them feel a little more comfortable," said Decker. "It's a different mentality in match play, where you are playing against one other person. Your strategy is based in large part to what he does. Normally we are trying to beat the course."
Decker and the Spiders will return to action in two weeks at the Wexford Intercollegiate in Hilton Head, S.C. on February 19-20.
