Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond swimming and diving program has earned the second highest GPA in the country and has been named a 2023 Fall Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Association of America (CSCAA), the organization announced Monday.
Teams were chosen based off of their Fall 2023 team grade point averages. 783 teams, and 18,716 student-athletes from 461 institutions were included in the decision process.
Richmond had the second highest GPA in Division I in the Fall (3.79). They trailed Marshall (3.80) by only .01, as the Thundering Herd claimed the highest GPA in the country.
Here is what head coach Matt Barany had to say on the team's accomplishment:
"Their work humbles me. Not only are they great students and talented athletes, but they are also very modest. I appreciate their normalness and fun-loving spirit."
Bruce Matthews, the University of Richmond's Associate Athletic Director for Academic Support & Student Services also made a statement on the team's success:
"We should all recognize and celebrate our swimming & diving team's incredible academic success. But what makes our team so extraordinary is its conscious commitment to collective excellence. On that level our team has no rivals."
The Spiders look to finish their season off strong in the classroom and the pool as they soon head to the A-10 Championships on Feb. 21 in Hampton, Va.
