PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — Facing their biggest field of the season, the Spiders sailed towards the top of the leaderboard in Round 1 of the Any Given Tuesday Collegiate, posting an even-par team score of 288 at True Blue Golf Club, tied for fourth among 19 teams.
Junior Cole Ekert heated up on the back nine, collecting three birdies to card a 2-under 70. Freshman Jack LaPiana was hot early, birdieing four of his first 10 holes and shooting a 1-under 71. Ekert is tied for ninth and LaPiana is in 14th place on the individual leaderboard.
"I've played well at this course in the past so I went into the round with a lot of confidence and felt very comfortable out there," said LaPiana after recording his best competitive round since he made his collegiate debut on this course in September.
"I also hit the ball great and was in good spots all day," LaPiana continued. "I am going to go into tomorrow with the same confidence I had today and focus on one shot at a time and see what happens."
Senior Lou Baker was in red figures for much of the day before bogeys on his final two holes pushed him to 1-over par (73), tied for 33rd place. Senior Garrett Clark is one shot behind in a tie for 45th at 2-over par (74).
Freshman Owen Pearce is tied for 88th at 6-over par (78), as is freshman Parker Moellinger, who is competing as an individual.
Richmond's 288 in Round 1 puts the Spiders in a tie with Southern Illinois for fourth place, trailing North Alabama (-5), Kansas City (-7), and Valparaiso (-12).
The Spiders will start Round 2 at 9:20 AM Tuesday.
