PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — The Richmond Spiders combined for a team score of 6-under par (282) in Round 2 of the Any Given Tuesday Collegiate Tuesday, moving into first place in the 19-team event with 18 holes remaining. Cole Ekert provided much of the firepower for the Spiders, recording seven birdies and one bogey for a 6-under 66, matching the fifth-lowest round in program history.
"I hit my irons really nicely today. I got in a good groove with my ball striking on the fourth hole or so and was confident all day," said Ekert. "I gave myself a ton more birdie looks under 20 feet than yesterday and got the putter rolling in the middle of the round."
Ekert stands at 8-under (136) through two rounds and holds a one stroke lead over Valparaiso's Caleb VanArragon atop the individual leaderboard. Richmond also holds a one-stroke lead as a team at 6-under, just in front of Long Island (-5), Valparaiso (-4) and North Alabama (-4).
Lou Baker moved into a tie for 15th place at 143 (1-under) Tuesday after shooting a 2-under 70. Freshman Jack LaPiana is one shot behind at even-par (144), tied for 24th.
Senior Garrett Clark is tied for 66th at 6-over par (150), just in front of freshman Owen Pearce, who's at 7-over par (151) and tied for 72nd.
Freshman Parker Moellinger is competing as an individual and is tied for 86th at 10-over par (154).
Wednesday's final round will begin with a shotgun start at 8:30 AM. Should the Spiders win, they would earn a spot in the 2025 Augusta Haskins Award Invitational.
"It's exciting for us to be in first going into tomorrow," said Ekert. "It looks like it's going to be some weird weather, so we just all need to focus up and give our best effort on every shot."
