Richmond, Va. – The University of Richmond men's lacrosse team fell 10-9 in the regular season finale to Saint Joseph's Saturday. The Spiders will be the No. 2 seed in next week's Atlantic 10 tournament at UMass and play No. 3 High Point at 6:00 on Thursday at Garber Field.
"Saint Joseph's is a great team," said Head Coach Dan Chemotti. "They have really good players and are well coached. They made some dynamic plays down the stretch and I didn't like the way we handled things on our end during that time."
Saint Joseph's put the first points on the board at 12:19 in the first quarter before the Spiders (9-5, 4-1 A-10) added the next two. Dalton Young tied things at one apiece at 5:54, then Lance Madonna picked up his first of the day at 8:56 in the second. Both Young and Madonna would go on to tally two goals and an assist each.
"It's win or go home at this point. Everything we do from here on out has to come with that mindset," said Young.
The Hawks (10-3, 5-0 A-10) scored two more goals in the second to take back the lead by 2:21, then Madonna scored his second goal, this one coming as the horn sounded heading into halftime to make it a tied game at three.
Richmond opened the second half with a three-goal run with tallies by Luke Grayum (assist Jared Chenoy), Lukas Olsson (assist Braden McClure) and Young's second and final of the night (assist Madonna).
Up 6-3, momentum swung in favor of Saint Joseph's as the Hawks scored six unanswered between 6:15 in the third and 10:17 in the fourth to go up 9-6. Aidan O'Neil and Grayum scored to bring it within one by the 8:10 mark of the fourth, but Saint Joseph's would tack on another and O'Neil's second goal on the night at 3:25 would come as Richmond's last as the Hawks slipped away with the one-goal victory.
The Spiders struggled to clear the ball, going 17-24 and turned the ball over 18 times to Saint Joseph's 15. The Hawks forced Richmond into 13 caused turnovers while the Spiders recorded eight, led by Jack Fabean and Joe Gooley with two each.
Richmond was 9-21 at the face off dot, and goalie Zach Vigue recorded nine saves. The Spiders held a 27-25 upper hand in ground balls.
"We have to be able to learn from this and grow from it and keep getting better," added Chemotti. "We still have some work to do. There are four great opponents going up to Massachusetts to play in the Atlantic 10 tournament and we just have to keep going."
