Richmond, Va. -Â The University of Richmond swimming and diving program has earned the second highest GPA in the country through the '23-'24 academic year and has been named a 2024 Spring Scholar All-America Team by the College Swimming and Diving Association of America (CSCAA), the organization announced Monday.
Â
Teams were chosen based off of their Spring 2024 team grade point averages. 722 teams, and 17,162 student-athletes from 417 institutions were included in the decision process.
Through two successful semesters in the pool and in the classroom, the program averaged a 3.795 '23-'24 GPA, the second highest for the combined year in the country (Saint Louis ranked No. 1 with an annual GPA of 3.82).Â
Â
Richmond had the fourth highest GPA in Division I in the Spring (3.80). They trailed Saint Louis (3.86), Columbia (3.83) and Illinois/Illinois State (3.81).Â
Â
In the Fall, the program ended the opening semester with an overall GPA of 3.79, the second highest in the country. They trailed Marshall (3.80) by only .01, as the Thundering Herd claimed the highest '23 Fall GPA in the country.
Here is what head coach Matt Barany had to say on the team's accomplishment:
Â
"This is a point of pride for the swimmers and divers – and it should be! Getting here takes a history of sacrifice, polished study skills, and influential teachers & professors. I'm thankful higher education and career opportunities still matter to our athletes".
