Spider Field Hockey Drops Season Opener to No. 18 Old Dominion

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond field hockey team dropped a defensive battle 3-0 to No. 18 Old Dominion Friday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Richmond (0-1) heads on the road to face William & Mary Sunday, Sept. 1 at Busch Field in Williamsburg, Va. Fans can tune in via FloSports, which is a paid app.
ODU jumped on the board first in the seventh minute of action, converting a penalty corner. The Richmond defense limited shots in the first quarter, but ODU held the upper hand 2-1.
The Monarchs picked up the attack in the second quarter, rattling off six shots, as Spiders goalkeeper Kristen Rake made three saves. ODU tallied a second goal, again off a penalty corner play.
Valen Luna Paratore fired off both Spiders first half shots with one on frame.
The Spiders kept the Monarchs off the board in the third quarter, allowing just two shots, with a save by Rake. Freshman Margaret Schuerer tallied a shot, but it went just wide of frame in the 43rd minute.
ODU collected a third goal in the 54th minute, converting on a third of five penalty corners in the contest. Richmond tallied two shots, one by Clara Larripa and one by Lainey Nichols, off two penalty corners. Rake and junior Madelyn Curtis both collected saves in the fourth quarter. Rake finished with five total saves.
