Russell Nets Overtime Goal for Spider Hockey Against Temple
09/08/2024 | Field Hockey
RICHMOND, Va. – University of Richmond's Avery Russell scored the game-winning goal two and a half minutes into overtime to capture the 3-2 victory over Temple Owls on Sunday afternoon at Crenshaw Field.
Russell got the ball in the circle, after Temple's goalkeeper made back-to-back stops against Clara Larripa and Valen Luna Paratore. She worked through the Temple defense and powered it past the goalkeeper.
Larripa put UR on the scoreboard first in the sixth minute of action. Larripa tallied her fifth goal of the season after she intercepted a Temple pass just outside the circle.
Temple tied the game in the seventh minuet with a clean-up shot in front of the goal.
Richmond earned two-straight penalty corners in the 11th minute of action. On the second one, Madelyn Curtis sent the insert pass to Freya MacKay, who set up Larripa for the power shot just inside the top of the circle.
Right before the first quarter ended, the Owls scored the 2-all equalizer on a corner play.
After a 45-minute defensive battle, Spider goalkeeper Kristen Rake made a huge save at the top of the goal to send it to overtime. Rake finished the contest with 11 saves, six in the first half and five in the second half.
Temple held the upper hand in shots, 16-10, including shots on goal, 13-17, and corners, 5-4.
Russell's second game-winning goal of the season moves the Spiders to 3-1 on the season and extends the squad's win streak to three-straight games. UR returns to action Friday, September 13 when the Spiders host No. 13 Ohio State for a 5 p.m. contest at Crenshaw Field on ESPN-plus.
