PAWLEYS ISLAND, S.C. — A trio of Spiders shot under par in the opening round of the 54-hole Golfweek Fall Challenge Sunday at True Blue Golf Club as Richmond combined for a team score of 2-under par (286), fourth in the 15-team field.
Senior Cole Ekert and freshman Carson Baez both shot 2-under (70), while junior Drew Carlin carded a 1-under 71 in a round that was interrupted by an inclement weather delay of approximately two hours. Both Ekert and Baez are tied for 10th in the field of 85 golfers.
"I expected a wave of nervousness to hit me warming up, but it just felt like another high school event seeing all the teams on the range," said Baez, who led Richmond with five birdies in his first collegiate round. "I went out with confidence and kept my foot on the pedal. I played my game and stuck to it. I had some blemishes ending my front, but I felt super confident for a good back nine. Despite the rain, I kept pushing and found the birdies I was looking for. I even had some of my best chances in the heavy stuff."
Carlin is tied for 15th at 1-under par after combining 15 pars, tied for fourth most in the field, with two birdies and one bogey.
Sophomore Jack LaPiana is tied for 42nd at 3-over par (75), and senior Patrick Isztwan is one shot back in a tie for 49th.
Playing as an individual, sophomore Quin Poin is tied for 30th at 1-over par (73).
The Spiders will enter Monday's second round two shots behind Wright State, four behind Austin Peay State, and nine behind 18-hole leaders Arkansas State. Richmond's tee times will run from 8:24 AM to 9:00 AM on the first tee.
"Going into the next few days, I'm excited to put things together and make my first collegiate event special," said Baez.
