
Swimming and Diving Fall On the Road to James Madison

HARRISONBURG, Va. – The University of Richmond's swimming and diving team competed in its last dual meet of the season against James Madison on Saturday afternoon. The Spiders fell to the Dukes, 174-124, at the Savage Natatorium.

On the day, the Spiders had six first-place finishes in the relays and individual events.

The Spider relay (A) took first in the 400 medley with a time of 3:49.98. Swimming in the relay were junior Caroline Weldon, freshman Gabbie Primiano, freshman Lena Amare, and sophomore Melissa Nwakalor. The 200 free relay (A) also finished first, with a time of 1:35.72. That relay was swum by sophomore Presley Baber, Nwakalor, junior Julia Krichev, and junior Caitlyn Hughes.

Primiano had two first-place finishes: the 100 breast (1:05.55) and the 200 breast (2:20.88). Nwakalor also finished first in the 50 free and set a new pool record with a time of 22.86. Amare took first in the 100 fly at 57.30.

Several Spiders posted season-best times. Junior Katie Chignell finished third in the 1000 free with a time of 10:40.57. Freshman Carys Edgar finished just behind, at 10:43.06. In the 100 free, Baber improved to finish fourth with a time of 52.79 after making gains in yesterday's meet against Navy.

In the diving competition, junior Tess Weatherhead led the Spiders in both the 1-meter and 3-meter dives.

Richmond is idle until February 7, when it will travel to the Virginia Tech Diving Invite and the Cavalier Invite for three days of competition.
