Spiders Surge Past Flyers, Improve to 8-1 in A-10 Play

DAYTON, Ohio – Behind Maggie Doogan's seventh career double-double, the University of Richmond women's basketball team snapped a nine-game road skid against Dayton Sunday afternoon, defeating the Flyers 83-72 to move to 17-5 overall and 8-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference action while the Flyers fell to 12-8 and 6-3 in conference play.

How it Happened
The Flyers opened the game with a quick layup before Doogan tied the game at two with one of her own. After five more ties in the first quarter, with buckets from Katie Hill, Doogan and Sam Dewey, the Spiders were finally able to break away from the Flyers with a 5-0 spurt to end the first quarter with a five-point lead, 19-14.
The two teams held each other scoreless to open the second quarter until 3:30 into the frame. Hill ended the scoring drought with a layup while Doogan followed the play with a layup following a defensive rebound by Alyssa Jimenez for a nine-point Spider lead, 23-14. Dayton ended its scoring drought with a triple, but Ally Sweeney responded on the other end with a trey of her own. UD then stormed back to cut the deficit to two from a 7-0 run, 26-24, before Hill posted a pair of free throws to get Richmond back into the scoring column. Dayton ended the half with two layups while Sweeney posted a triple followed by a buzzer-beater three-pointer from Hill to send the Spiders into the locker room ahead 34-28 at the half. Doogan and Hill each reached double figures in the first half as Hill saw 10 points while Doogan posted 11 points and paced the team with seven rebounds.

After a hoop-and-harm from Dayton, Ullstrom responded with another three-point play to keep the Spiders ahead by six, 39-33. The Flyers wouldn't be silenced, however, as another jumper from the opposition cut the lead back to four, 39-35. The two teams continued to exchange points on each end of the court before Doogan posted three points from an and-one play to push the lead to 49-41. Dayton ended the scoring drought with a layup and two made free throws before Doogan sparked a 5-0 run for the Spiders to push the lead back to nine, 54-45. After exchanging a couple of points, Dayton posted a layup while Budnik capitalized from deep to send Richmond into the final 10 minutes ahead 60-52.
Alston opened the final 10 minutes with a layup to give the Spiders a 10-point lead, 62-52. Budnik followed the play with two made free throws while Sweeney capitalized on an off-balanced layup to push the lead to 14, 66-52. Dayton responded with a 7-0 run to cut the lead to single digits, but Ullstrom continud the offensive prowl with a trey. Budnik then followed suit with a layup before an and-one play from the opposition cut the lead back down to single digits, 71-62. After exchanging a few more points, Sweeney combined with Doogan for four points for a 78-68 lead. After a lone free throw from Dayton, Budnik went 2-of-2 at the charity stripe to push the lead to 11, 80-69. Richmond ended the game going 3-of-4 from the free throw line while Dayton posted a late triple as the Spiders notched their seventh-straight win, 83-72.

Notes on the Game
- Maggie Doogan paced the team with 26 points and recorded her seventh career double-double with a team-high 11 rebounds. The game marked her second double-double of the season as well as her 20th straight game in double figures.
- Three other Spiders ended the game in double figures in Addie Budnik (14 pts), Rachel Ullstrom (16 pts) and Katie Hill (13 pts).
- As a team, the Spiders shot 29-of-59 (49.2%) from the floor, 9-of-30 (30%) from deep and 16-of-23 (69.6%) from the free throw line. In addition, the Spiders recorded 27 rebounds, 20 assists, seven steals and forced the Flyers into 16 turnovers, which resulted in nine points. Richmond stayed active in the paint, scoring 40 points down low.
- Hill and Doogan combined for 12 assists and four steals while Budnik collected the lone block for the Spiders.
- Richmond snapped a nine-game road skid against the Flyers, defeating Dayton on the road for the first time since a 68-66 decision on Feb. 20, 2008.
- Budnik recorded her 99th career game in double figures.
- The Spiders move to 2-0 on the season against the Flyers after Richmond picked up a 55-37 win on Dec. 29 inside the Robins Center.
