Spiders Dominate UMass for First Amherst Win Since 2018

AMHERST, Mass. – With all three Massachusetts products on the Spider roster scoring in the game, the University of Richmond women's basketball team secured an 82-52 win against the Minutewomen Sunday afternoon in Amherst. With the win, the Spiders picked up their first win in Amherst since Jan. 31, 2018, and improved to 11-5 on the year and 2-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, handing Massachusetts (7-7, 2-1 A-10) its first conference loss.

How it Happened
Richmond opened the game with two back-to-back triples before Massachusetts scored its first two points in the game off a layup 3:47 into the game. After the layup, the Spiders went on a 7-0 run with efforts from Ally Sweeney, Addie Budnik and Maggie Doogan for a 13-2 advantage. The Minutewomen only managed to get off six points in the remainder of the quarter as Richmond built a 21-point lead, 29-8, paced by Rachel Ullstrom with 11 points. Richmond ended the first quarter shooting 11-13 from the floor and a near-perfect 7-8 from deep. The Spiders also notched seven straight triples before missing their only triple of the quarter in just over seven minutes played.
The Spider shooting efforts slowed in the second quarter but still outpaced UMass 15-7. Alyssa Jimenez opened the second 10 minutes with a layup, sparking a 7-0 run for a 36-8 Richmond lead. After three quick points from the opposition, Ullstrom put the Spiders back into the scoring column with a triple to rebuild the lead to 28, 39-11. She followed the play with another triple after a UMass layup to keep the momentum going. Doogan and Katie Hill capped off the quarter with a triple and layup as UMass recorded four points to end the half with the Spiders ahead, 44-15.
UMass cut the lead to 44-18 off a triple to open the third quarter, but Hill responded on the other end with a triple of her own. Doogan then followed the play with a layup, and Budnik kept things rolling with a trey for a 52-18 advantage. After a 4-0 spurt from the Minutewomen, Sweeney posted a jumper for a 55-22 advantage. The two teams then exchanged points before Faith Alston saw a triple and Budnik recorded a layup for a 62-29 Richmond lead heading into the final 10 minutes.
UMass opened the final quarter with a jumper, but Doogan immediately responded with an easy layup. After another mid-range jumper from the opposition, Doogan and Ullstrom combined for three points for a 67-33 lead. The Minutewomen wouldn't be silenced, however, as the team recorded a triple and layup with 6:18 left in the game to cut the lead to 67-38. Faith Alston and Doogan combined for five points while UMass got a couple of shots off to keep the lead at 30, 72-42. After exchanging a few more points, Steph Ouderkirk netted back-to-back triples to give the Spiders a 35-point advantage while hometown hero Payton Richard finished the scoring for Richmond with a layup. UMass managed two more buckets as time expired, but Richmond picked up the conference win, 82-52.
Notes on the Game
- Richmond picked up its first win in Amherst since a 51-39 win on Jan. 31, 2018, and is now 2-3 in the last five matchups.
- Maggie Doogan and Rachel Ullstrom paced the team with 16 points each. Ullstrom finished the game with four rebounds and a steal, while Doogan had a team-high six boards and two steals.
- Budnik matched a career-high seven assists to lead the team, while Doogan added six.
- Katie Hill led the team with three steals.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 32 of 59 (54.2%) from the floor, 17 of 33 (51.5%) from deep, and recorded 33 rebounds, 25 assists, eight steals, and one block courtesy of Budnik, who is third in career blocks of all NCAA DI active players with 308. The team also had 31 points off 16 UMass turnovers, and the bench contributed 25 points.
- Payton Richard (Bolton, Mass., 2 pts), Sam Dewey (Melrose, Mass., 2 pts), and Rachel Ullstrom (Auburn, Mass.) all scored in their home state.
- Aaron Roussell picked up his 49th Atlantic 10 win.
- Doogan posted her 14th straight game in double figures.
