Richmond Defeats George Mason in High-Scoring Thriller Behind Doogan's 37 Points

RICHMOND, Va. – Behind a stellar career-high performance from Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team picked up an 88-86 win over visiting George Mason on Wednesday night inside the Robins Center to move to 12-5 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference, while the Patriots fell to 12-3 overall and 2-2 in conference play.

How it Happened
Rachel Ullstrom got things going with a layup before the Patriots stormed to an 11-2 lead to respond. Faith Alston made an immediate impact after coming into the game, netting a triple with 6:20 left in the quarter to cut the deficit to 11-5. Mason was able to preserve its lead at nine, 16-7, before Addie Budnik posted five points to bring the game within four, 16-12. The Patriots then built a 16-point lead, 28-12, before Ullstrom ended the scoring drought and the quarter with a triple, 28-15.
The teams exchanged points to open the second quarter, as George Mason preserved a 15-point lead before Ally Sweeney posted a layup, sparking a 7-0 run for the Spiders, cutting the deficit to 32-24. After a lone layup from the opposition, Sweeney again capitalized on a jumper to bring the Spiders within six, 36-30. George Mason managed another trey before the Spiders went on a 5-0 run with efforts from Sweeney and Budnik to come within four, 39-35. Mason then pushed their lead to five, 43-38, before Doogan, Budnik, and Anna Camden combined for 11 points to hand the Spiders a four-point lead, 49-45, at the half.
Doogan opened the third quarter with a layup for a 51-45 advantage. The Patriots then scratched back and retook the lead off a triple, 54-53, but Doogan posted three points off a hoop-and-harm and gave UR back the lead, 56-54. The teams exchanged a few points before a pair of free throws and a triple from Hill gave the Spiders a two-point lead, 66-64. Doogan ended the quarter with another two free throws as George Mason posted a buzzer-beater layup to head into the fourth quarter with a slight 68-66 Spider lead.
Hill opened the fourth quarter with a layup before Mason responded and took the lead at 71-70. Budnik gave Richmond back the lead from a layup of her own, but the opposition responded with a free throw to tie the game at 72. After exchanging points, Doogan posted a triple, and Ullstrom followed with a layup to take an 81-77 lead. The Patriots then went on a short 5-0 run before Budnik ended the scoring threat with a triple. Mason managed to tie the game at 86 with 1:12 left, but Doogan was able to put back a layup for the 88-86 home win. Mason attempted a final layup but was unable to capitalize.

Notes on the Game
- Maggie Doogan had a stellar night, shooting 12-for-18 from the floor, 3-for-6 from deep, and 10-for-11 from the free throw line for a career-high 37 points, tied for fourth-most in Spider women's basketball history. The junior finished the night matching a career-high eight assists, four rebounds, one block and two steals.
- Addie Budnik (17), Rachel Ullstrom (12) and Ally Sweeney (12) also scored in double figures. Ullstrom and Hill led the team with six rebounds each.
- As a team, the Spiders shot 31-for-52 (59.6%) from the floor, 12-for-25 (48%) from deep and 14-for-16 (87.5%) from the charity stripe. In addition, the Spiders recorded 30 rebounds, 20 assists, three blocks and two steals. Richmond also forced the Patriots into six turnovers resulting in nine points.
- The game saw eight ties and 16 lead changes.
- This marks the third game this season a player has posted 30 or more points for Richmond, as Ullstrom posted 35 against Oakland and 32 at Temple to open the season.
- Head Coach Aaron Roussell notched his 50th Atlantic 10 Conference win. His A-10 total moves to 50-33.
