Spiders Earn First-Ever Patriot League Victory, Pass Colgate 24-19 Saturday

Hamilton, N.Y. — Two explosive, game-changing plays — one by Andreas Hill and another by Ja'Vion Griffin — powered the University of Richmond football team to a 24–19 win at Colgate, securing the Spiders' first-ever Patriot League victory.
Hill, a sophomore wide receiver, turned the game on its head early in the fourth quarter with a stunning 75-yard touchdown reception. On the first play following a Colgate field goal that gave the Raiders a 13–10 lead, quarterback Ashten Snelsire launched a deep ball downfield. Hill split a double team, hauled in the catch, and sprinted into the end zone for his first career touchdown — a momentum-shifting score that gave Richmond a 17–13 advantage. Hill finished with a career-best 105 yards on two catches, marking the first time Richmond has posted back-to-back games with a 100-yard receiver since 2023.
Just five minutes later, with Richmond trailing 19–17 after a Colgate touchdown, it was Griffin's turn to deliver a jolt. Pressed into return duties due to injuries, Griffin fielded a punt at his own 13-yard line and never looked back. Griffin dashed 87 yards down the sideline for Richmond's first punt return touchdown since Nov. 25, 2023, flipping the game yet again and giving the Spiders a 24–19 lead they would hold onto for the win.
The victory marked another milestone for Head Coach Russ Huesman, who earned his 56th win at Richmond — and his first conference win as a member of the Patriot League. Colgate, fittingly, has been the site of multiple "firsts" for Huesman: back in 2017, he notched his first-ever win as the Spiders' head coach with a gritty 20–17 comeback on the same field.
Snelsire, making his second career start, completed 13 of 19 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown through the air, and added his first career rushing touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneak to open the scoring late in the first quarter.
Colgate responded quickly with a field goal and later took a 10–7 lead on a 13-yard fade to cap a 92-yard drive. Richmond tied it just before halftime with a 24-yard field goal from Jayden Alsheskie, set up by a crucial Colgate holding penalty that extended the drive.
The third quarter was a defensive deadlock, with both teams punting on every possession. Richmond punter Ned Gray, who wasn't called upon at all the previous week, delivered six punts at an average of 39.7 yards, including a career-long 51-yarder.
Colgate briefly regained the lead early in the fourth before Hill and Griffin's fireworks shifted the game for good.
The Raiders had one final chance, taking over with 1:31 remaining, but Peyton Seelmann intercepted a Raider pass to seal the win. It was Seelmann's first career interception and capped off a performance that included 12 tackles and a tackle for loss. It also marked his third straight game with double-digit tackles. Jordan Allen added 11 stops, while Carter Glassmyer chipped in eight tackles, a sack, and a pass breakup.
Richmond (4–3, 1–2 Patriot League) returns to Robins Stadium for Homecoming on Oct. 18 at 2:00 p.m., when they host Holy Cross.
