STATESBORO, Ga. — Junior Jack LaPiana's 5-under 67 led four Spiders in red figures as Richmond posted a team score of 11-under par in Round 2 of Georgia Southern's Bash in the Boro Monday afternoon. Richmond's second round score, which equaled the seventh-best round in program history, shot the Spiders into fourth place in the 12-team event at 3-under par (576) through 36 holes.
LaPiana is tied for seventh on the individual leaderboard at 5-under par (139). He opened the event with an even-par 72 in Round 1.
"I felt like I played pretty solid in the morning, but just didn't score as well as I could've so I knew I could put together a good one in the afternoon," said LaPIana. "I hit a handful of pretty good shots and got some putts to drop so it ended up being a pretty good number in the afternoon."
LaPiana's 5-under is one shot off the low round of his collegiate career, which came in the final round of Richmond's last event, September's Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational. He played the par 3s at Georgia Southern University Golf Club in a combined 2-under par Monday, tied for the best in the field of 81 golfers.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron is tied for 14th at 2-under par after rounds of 73 (+1) and 69 (-3) Monday. He will be seeking his second top-20 finish in three career events Tuesday after tying for 14th in Richmond's season-opening Metropolis Intercollegiate.
Sophomore Carson Baez is tied for 27th at 1-over par (145). He played the par 5s in a combined 7-under par Monday, tied for fourth best in the field.
Juniors Quin Polin and Parker Moellinger are tied for 38th at 3-over par (147). Moellinger, competing as an individual at the event, shot rounds of 73 (+1) and 74 (+2) Monday. Polin's 1-under Monday afternoon was Richmond's fourth score under par in Round 2.
Senior Drew Carlin is tied for 70th at 11-over par (155).
" I'm really proud of how we fought in the afternoon and it's nice to see four rounds in red figures this afternoon," said LaPIana. "I think we've got a lot of good golf in us and hopefully we can show that tomorrow."
Richmond's 11-under in Round 2 nine shots better than any of UR's 18-hole scores in its first two events of the season. The Spiders will tee off in Tuesday's third and final round at 8:30 AM.
