Tyne, Robinson Lift Spiders to Exhibition Win
10/25/2025 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — Junior Mikkel Tyne controlled the first half, and redshirt freshman Jaylen Robinson dominated down the stretch as the Spiders downed JMU 63-58 in an exhibition game Saturday evening at the Robins Center. Richmond held the Dukes, preseason favorites in the Sun Belt conference, to 32% shooting from the field, including just 9-30 (30%) in the second half.
"We looked like a veteran team," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "Like every coach in the country after an exhibition, I'd say we have a lot to work on. But being that it was a close game and we had to do some things and make some plays down the stretch, I thought that was really, really good for us."
Robinson (6) and senior Jonathan Beagle (4) combined for Richmond's final 10 points as UR turned a 4-point deficit into a 5-point lead over the game's final seven minutes. Robinson, seeing his first college action after redshirting last season, finished 14 points on 7-9 shooting from the field and five rebounds.
"I think Jaylen Robinson was terrific," said Mooney. "Really, really impactful with everything that he did. [He] is really a special, special talent in regard to [his athleticism]."
The only Spider to score more was Tyne, who scored all of his game-high 16 points in the first half. He ensured the Spiders held the lead at the break with a pair of three-pointers in the final 30 seconds of the period, the final one just beating the buzzer after freshman Aiden Argabrigh grabbed a rebound and fired an outlet pass to Tyne, who was streaking up the left side of the court. Tyne pulled up for his fourth three-pointer of the half, giving Richmond a 34-30 lead at the break.
Grad student AJ Lopez joined Tyne and Robinson in double figures, finishing with 10 points. Beagle finished with eight points and a team-high seven rebounds, while senior Mike Walz recorded a team-high five assists and no turnovers.
"I thought both centers played well," said Mooney of Walz and Beagle.
The Spiders offset a 1-11 performance from three-point range in the second half by converting on 13 of 18 (72%) two-point field goals in the final period.
Richmond will open its season a week from Wednesday on November 5, when the Spiders host Southern Virginia in the Robins Center at 7 PM.
