Depth Shines as Spiders Overwhelm Southern Virginia

RICHMOND, Va. — Four Spiders scored in double figures as Richmond rolled over Division III Southern Virginia, 84-56, to open the 2025-26 season Wednesday night at the Robins Center. Senior Jonathan Beagle finished with a game-high 12 points, junior Collin Tanner and freshman Aiden Argabright tallied 11, and junior Mikkel Tyne added 10 as the Spiders won their season opener for a seventh straight season.
"I feel like we've got a lot of guys who can sub in. We're all ready to sacrifice that. We want to play, and we want to play fast," said Beagle.
"I liked that the ball kept moving," said Spiders coach Chris Mooney. "It wasn't like if one lineup was in there we did something very different or the ball stopped moving or we couldn't do certain things. I feel like we had guys who continued to play and moved the ball well and moved themselves well and kept the pressure on the defense."
Fourteen different Spiders appeared in the game, with 12 scoring, the most different Spiders to score in a game since 12 scored in a win vs Liberty on Nov. 9, 2012.
"It enables us to push the pace. It enables us to provide some pressure, get on the backboard," said Mooney of the benefits of the team's deep rotation. "I just feel like there isn't a huge separation between the first 12 guys."
Richmond won the rebounding battle 47-33 and registered 14 second-chance points to zero for the Knights. UR's 47 rebounds were its most since registering 49 vs Duquesne on March 6, 2020. Mike Walz led UR with seven rebounds.
I thought our energy and getting on the floor and attacking the backboard — I thought all of those things were really positive," said Mooney. "I think [rebounding] is something we can be good at and hopefully aid us when we have nights when we don't shoot well."
Richmond connected on just seven of its 34 three-point attempts (21%) but hit on 23 of its 36 shots from inside the arc (64%). The Spiders also piled up 15 assists against just six turnovers, with Argabright's three assists leading the way.
"He's going to be a great player," said Mooney. "We've had a lot of these smaller guards who have done great and he has a lot of those same qualities. He has a really great sense for the game — a really, really savvy player. He's very quick. He has a sense for how to score. He shoots the ball well. He's very competitive. So I think he's going to be a great player."
Richmond took control of the game with an early 10-0 run that was punctuated by a fastbreak layup and three-pointer from Argabright. A 12-0 run toward the end of the opening period helped the Spiders build a 42-25 lead at intermission.
The Spiders outscored the Knights 20-4 over the first eight-plus minutes of the second half to build their lead to as many as 33 points.
The win was the 1,500th victory in program history, as UR improved its all-time record to 1,500-1,294 in 113 seasons. UR is now 18-3 in season openers under Chris Mooney.
The Spiders will aim for a 2-0 start Saturday at the Robins Center vs ECU. Tip time is 6 PM and the game will be broadcast on both ESPN Plus and MASN.
