Wire-to-Wire Win Moves Spiders to 10-2
12/20/2025 | Men's Basketball
RICHMOND, Va. — The Richmond Spiders stayed unbeaten in the Robins Center with an 80-56 win over The Citadel Bulldogs Saturday. Richmond opened the game on a 15-3 run and never let its lead dip below five for the remainder of the contest as UR improved to 10-2, equaling its best 12-game start in 21 seasons under coach Chris Mooney.
"I was really pleased with our defensive effort," said Mooney. "We were very good defensively in the second half, and I'm pleased with the win and looking forward to a few days' break here."
The Spiders won't return to action until a week from Sunday when they host Charleston Southern in their non-conference finale. With a win in that game, UR would equal its most non-conference wins in a season (11) since the Spiders were independent for three seasons from 1976-79.
After turning the ball over 20 times Wednesday at Elon — their most in five years — the Spiders turned the ball over just eight times Saturday while racking up 17 assists.
"The other night was very uncharacteristic, and we talked about it," said Mooney. "If we can be as aggressive as we possibly can — and you're going to have a few turnovers by being aggressive — that's fine. But we need to make sure that we don't have any that are unforced."
"I think we played with a little bit more poise," added guard Collin Tanner, who equaled a career high with 13 points.
The Spiders put the game away with a late 11-0 run that stretched an 11-point lead to 22 with less than four minutes remaining.
"I think our depth and the speed at which we play allows us to pull away late in games," said Tanner when asked about Richmond's late run. "If we always have fresh guys coming in and we're always moving, we can kind of wear other teams down. The later we get into the game, the more our depth is an advantage for us."
Richmond's final points came on an open-court dunk by Jaylen Robinson over a pair of Citadel defenders that brought the Robins Center crowd to its feet and allowed Richmond to reach the 80-point mark for the ninth time in 12 games this season.
The Spiders are 8-0 in the Robins Center, making 2025-26 the fifth time UR has opened a season with eight straight home wins since the arena opened in 1972.
The majority of Richmond's damage was done from in close, as the Spiders shot 20-26 (77%) on two-point shots, its best since Jan. 22, 2020 vs La Salle (79%). Forward Jaden Daughtry led UR with 17 points, and center Mike Walz and guard AJ Lopez each added 14. Daughtry also contributed four steals, equaling his career high.
At 10-2, Richmond has equaled its win total from all of last season, when UR finished 10-22.
"I think that we have a really great group of guys, and I think we have the type of team that will get better as the year goes on" said Tanner. "I think we'll play our best basketball late in the season."
