Spiders Fall to Fairfield Sunday Afternoon at Home

RICHMOND, Va. – Despite 24 points from Maggie Doogan, the University of Richmond women's basketball team suffered its third loss of the season Sunday afternoon, falling 93-73 to Fairfield inside the Robins Center. With the loss, the Spiders moved to 7-3, while the Stags improved to 5-3.

How it Happened
Fairfield opened on an 8-0 run before Ally Sweeney got Richmond on the board with a jumper to make it 8-2. After six more Stag points, Sweeney added a free throw for the Spiders' third point. Fairfield then used a 5-0 spurt before Ava Persichetti converted a second-chance layup to trim the deficit to 19-5. The Stags added two more points before two free throws from Ullstrom cut it to 21-7. Following another Fairfield triple, Sweeney scored five straight as the Spiders ended the quarter down 24-12.
Both teams traded triples to open the second quarter. Fairfield added a layup before Ullstrom completed a three-point play to pull Richmond within 29-20. A 5-0 Fairfield stretch pushed the margin to 34-20 before Sweeney ended the drought with a jumper. The Stags answered with an 11-0 run to take a 45-22 lead with 3:24 left in the half. Ullstrom added two free throws before Fairfield knocked down another triple. Persichetti responded with a layup, but another Stag trey extended the gap to 51-26. Doogan and Persichetti combined for six points to close the half with Richmond trailing 51-32.
Out of halftime the teams exchanged layups before a Fairfield triple made it 56-34. Doogan hit a free throw, then both sides added threes to keep the margin at 20, 61-38. After more back-and-forth from beyond the arc, Doogan completed an and-one for a 67-44 deficit. Fairfield maintained control the rest of the quarter before two free throws and a layup from Doogan cut it to 74-52 entering the fourth.
Fairfield pushed its lead to 28 early in the final period before two Doogan free throws made it 82-56. After a Stag layup, Sweeney and Doogan combined for eight points to bring Richmond within 84-64 with 4:35 remaining. The teams traded baskets down the stretch as Fairfield held its 20-point cushion. Shaneka Campbell closed the game with a made free throw, with Richmond falling 93-73.

- Fairfield hit 19 three pointers, the most Richmond has allowed since giving up 16 against Ohio on Dec. 22, 2018.
- Doogan paced Richmond with 24 points, seven assists and two blocks.
- Three other Spiders scored in double figures: Ullstrom (18), Sweeney (17) and Persichetti (11). Ullstrom led Richmond with seven rebounds and Sweeney added two steals.
- Richmond shot 25-of-54 (46.3 percent) from the field, 9-of-29 (31 percent) from three and 14-of-17 (82.4 percent) from the line. The Spiders posted 25 rebounds, 16 assists, three blocks and five steals.
- The loss marked Richmond's first home defeat since Dec. 15, 2024, against No. 6 Texas.
- Richmond allowed 90 points for the first time since giving up 92 to Tennessee on Dec. 20, 2024.
