Spiders Ground Hawks to Close Out Regular Season in Philly

PHILADELPHIA – With four Spiders in double figures, the University of Richmond women's basketball team notched their 16th-straight win Saturday afternoon, 73-65, on the road at Saint Joseph's in the regular season finale. With the win, the Spiders finish the 2024-25 regular season at 26-5 and 17-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Hawks fell to 21-8 and 12-6 in the A-10.

How it Happened
The Hawks opened the scoring with a triple before Rachel Ullstrom responded with a layup. SJU then got off a layup for a 5-2 lead, but a layup from Ally Sweeney and a trey from Addie Budnik gave the Spiders their first lead of the game at 7-5. Ullstrom then gave UR a four-point lead with a layup, but Saint Joseph's responded with a jumper to cut the Spider lead to 9-7. Alyssa Jimenez then entered the game and gave Richmond a jolt, netting a triple with 4:19 left in the quarter for a 12-7 lead. After exchanging a few points on each end, Jimenez and Katie Hill combined for five points to end the quarter with the Spiders leading 19-13.
SJU again opened the scoring in the second quarter off a layup before Doogan posted two free throws to preserve the six-point lead. After exchanging layups on each end, SJU went 2-of-2 from the charity stripe before Budnik posted back-to-back triples for a 10-point Spider lead and Doogan added another trey for a 13-point lead, 32-19. SJU recorded two free throws before Hill posted a layup to preserve the lead. The Hawks then scratched back to 34-24 before two free throws and a layup from Sweeney ended the scoring for the Spiders at the half. SJU managed four points to end the third quarter with Richmond leading 38-28.
The opposition recorded a jumper out of the break before Anna Camden posted a trey to keep the Spiders ahead by 11, 41-30. SJU then went on a 5-0 run before Ullstrom ended the drought with a layup for a 43-35 UR lead. Hill then followed the play with a layup of her own, but the Hawks continued their offensive threat with a triple, 45-38. Doogan managed to record a free throw before the Hawks brought it within six, 46-40, off a free throw. SJU added a jumper and a lone free throw while Ullstrom posted a trey as Richmond headed into the final 10 minutes with an eight-point advantage, 49-41.
A triple from Saint Joseph's would cut the Spider lead to 49-44 to open the final frame, which sparked a 7-0 run for the home team before Faith Alston posted a layup to get UR back into the scoring column, 51-48. The Hawks then tied the game at 51, and again at 53 off a layup. Jimenez then posted another triple from the corner while Budnik followed the play with one of her own to rebuild the Spider lead to six, 59-53. SJU then recorded another jumper while Doogan responded with two free throws to keep Richmond ahead, 61-55. After back-and-forth points, Doogan and Sweeney combined for five points to pull ahead 67-59 before a lone free throw would keep SJU within seven, 67-60. After a layup from Budnik, a 3-0 spurt from SJU would cut the Spider lead to 69-63, but Hill went a perfect 4-of-4 from the free throw line for a 10-point Spider lead, 73-63. SJU ended the game with two free throws, but it wasn't enough as the Spiders downed Saint Joseph's on Hawk Hill, 73-65.

- Following the victory, the Spiders posted their most consecutive wins in a single season at 16, besting a previous mark of 15 straight games in the 1989-90 season.
