WASHINGTON – The Atlantic 10 Conference announced on Tuesday the 2024-25 End of Season Awards for women's basketball as Richmond notched two awards in the major categories of Player of the Year and Coach of the Year, while the team also picked up two All-Conference First Team selections.
Maggie Doogan, a Broomall, Pa., native was named Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, the first Player of the Year honor for the Spiders in the A-10 and the program's first since 1990, when Pam Bryant picked up her second-straight POTY honor in the CAA. In addition, the junior was also named to the All-Conference First Team and All-Academic Team. Doogan has been one of the most productive players in the Atlantic 10 in 2024-25, leading Richmond with 16.8 ppg, 7.1 rpg and 3.6 apg while shooting 55 percent from the field, 38.1 percent from three and 79.5 percent from the charity stripe. The junior ranks third in the A-10 in scoring, second in field-goal percentage, fourth in free throw percentage and is a top-10 leader in rebounding, assists and blocked shots.
A three-time A-10 Player of the Week (Dec. 9, 2024, Jan. 13, 2025, Feb. 24, 2025), Doogan has consistently delivered high-level performances, finishing in double figures in 24-straight games from Nov. 12, 2024, to Feb. 12, 2025, before being held to eight points against Saint Louis on the Spiders' senior day and rounded out the regular season on a four-game streak in double figures. She recorded a career-high 37 points against George Mason on Jan. 8, 2025, to help the Spiders remain on top of the A-10 ranks, followed by 26 points at Davidson and most recently, 33 points at VCU. She also surpassed 1,000 career points and 500 rebounds this season, becoming just the fourth Spider in program history to reach that mark in three seasons. In addition to conference honors, Doogan was named World Exposure Report National Player of the Week (Feb. 24, 2025), to the NCAA.com National Starting Lineup twice this season and is a semifinalist for the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award.
Head Coach Aaron Roussell picks up back-to-back Coach of the Year honors after leading Richmond to a 26-5 record in the regular season and a 17-1 record in Atlantic 10 Conference play, marking the first team to go 17-1 in A-10 play and the first team to only lose one game in a conference season since Dayton in 2022. Roussell led the Spiders to the highest NET ranking of A-10 teams at 32, as Richmond picked up one Quad 1 win on the year, a perfect 5-0 mark in Quad 2 games, 4-0 in Quad 3 games and a 16-2 record in Quad 4 matchups. The Spiders are also 9-3 against NET Top-100 teams. Richmond ended the regular season on a program-best 16-game win streak, as well as notching 24 straight home conference wins dating back to a 73-58 win against George Mason on Jan. 1, 2023. In addition, the Spiders also captured outright back-to-back Atlantic 10 Regular Season titles, adding to the 2024 regular season title and the 1984 and 1990 championship seasons in the CAA. The Spiders also shared the co-regular season championship with JMU in 1991 in the CAA. As a World Exposure Report Women's Basketball Mid-Major Head Coach of the Year Finalist, Roussell has led his team to the second-best field-goal percentage in the country at 49.6 percent and the third-best three-point percentage nationally at a 38.7 percent clip.
Junior Rachel Ullstrom joins Doogan on the All-Conference First Team. From Atlantic 10 Sixth Woman of the Year in 2023-24 to a full-time starter in 2024-25, Ullstrom has solidified herself as a key contributor for Richmond in conference play and on the national stage. The junior from Auburn, Mass., is the Spiders' second-leading scorer, averaging 15.7 points per game while also recording 5.1 rebounds and 1.5 steals per game. She has been one of the most efficient shooters in the A-10, ranking third in the league in field-goal percentage at 53.9 percent while shooting 41.8 percent from three-point range and 86.7 percent from the free-throw line. Her 15.7 points per game rank seventh in the A-10, while her efficiency from the floor makes her one of the most consistent scoring threats in the conference.
Ullstrom reached the 1,000-point milestone in the first quarter at Duquesne, becoming just the 11th Spider in program history to accomplish the feat within three seasons. She was named to the USBWA Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Midseason Watch List and earned her first national honor as USBWA National Player of the Week on Jan. 21 after leading Richmond to dominant wins over St. Bonaventure and VCU, averaging 22.0 points per game while shooting 81% from the field and 75% from 3-point range. Earlier in the season, she was named A-10 Co-Player of the Week on Nov. 11 after scoring 43 points through the opening week of action.
She scored a career-high 32 points in the season opener at Temple on Nov. 4, then surpassed that mark with 35 points against Oakland on Nov. 29 in the Daytona Beach Classic. In that game, she set a Richmond program record with 11 made 3-pointers, breaking the previous record of eight set by Rachael Bilney against George Washington in 2012. That performance also made her the first Spider to score 35 or more points in a game since Kate Flavin did so in 2004. Her 11 3-pointers were the most made in a single game by any NCAA Division I player this season, and she is only one of two players with 11 triples in a game as of 3/1/25. She was later named to the Daytona Beach Classic All-Tournament Team after leading Richmond to wins over Oklahoma State and Oakland.
Spider great Addie Budnik also joins the award list, picking up All-Conference Second Team and All-Academic Team honors. A defensive force and a consistent offensive contributor, Budnik averaged 10.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and just under a block per game and remains one of the most dominant rim protectors in the country. She ranks fourth among all active NCAA Division I players with 317 career blocks while adding 27 this season, good for 12th in the A-10.
On the offensive end, Budnik has been a model of efficiency, shooting 47.7 percent from the field, 38.3 percent from three-point range, and 83 percent from the free-throw line. She has reached double figures 18 times this season, including a season-high 24 points at Fordham on Jan. 2.
The No. 1-seeded Spiders open the Atlantic 10 Conference Championship on Friday at 11 a.m. on Peacock, taking on the winner of No. 8 Fordham and No. 9 Duquesne. Fans can purchase A-10 Championship ticket books and individual game tickets on the women's basketball schedule page.
