Spiders Drop A-10 Opener at Duquesne

PITTSBURGH – The University of Richmond women's soccer team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 3-0 setback Sunday afternoon at Duquesne. With the result, the Spiders fell to 3-3-3 overall and 0-1-0 in Atlantic 10 Conference play, while the Dukes improved to 6-2-1, 1-0-0.
How It Happened
The Dukes grabbed the lead in the 11th minute when Maya Matesa finished unassisted inside the box. Richmond kept the deficit at one through halftime, thanks in part to seven first-half saves from Spider keeper Veronica Rrapi.
Duquesne doubled its advantage just 78 seconds into the second half as Brianna Moore scored off a feed from Kaitlyn Killinger. The Spiders generated their best look late in the match when Anna Garcia forced Ali Hughes into a save in the 87th minute, but the Dukes put the game out of reach moments later as Killinger added an unassisted strike in the 83rd minute to secure the 3-0 result.
Notes on the Game
- The Spiders tallied three shots in the match, with Emma Newman, Marisa Snee and Anna Garcia each recording one. Garcia posted Richmond's lone shot on goal.
- Goalkeeper Veronica Rrapi registered a career-high 12 saves, including seven in the opening half.
- Duquesne held a 26-3 advantage in shots, 15-1 in shots on target and a 12-0 edge in corner kicks.
