FARMINGTON, Pa. — The Richmond men's golf team finds itself in the middle of the leaderboard following a long opening day of the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational Monday. The Spiders, who still have two golfers yet to finish their second round, are in 10th place on the 19-team leaderboard at 5-over par. Richmond is just behind A-10 rival George Mason (+2), who the Spiders were paired with for the first two rounds of the 54-hole event.
Sophomore Carson Baez is the top Spider on the individual leaderboard at 3-under par, tied for 14th in the field of 100 golfers. Baez's 4-under 68 in the second round moved him more than 20 spots up the individual leaderboard after he opened the event with a 1-over 73.
"Out of the gates, my speed control with putting was off and I got away with a few early. After that, the mistakes kept adding up and had me really aggravated. For as good as I was driving and hitting my irons, I was just trying my best to stay patient," said Baez of his opening round performance. "I got some advice to slow the stroke down and smooth it out, then went on a heater in round 2."
Baez played the par 4s at Mystic Rock Golf Course in 3-under par Monday, tied for third best in the field.
With one hole remaining in his second round, junior Jack LaPiana is tied for 30th at even par. LaPiana and freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron (tied for 68th at 6-over par) will finish their second round on the par 3, 231-yard third hole at 7:30 AM Tuesday.
Senior Drew Carlin is tied for 56th at 4-over par, and junior Quin Polin is tied for 76th at 8-over par. The third at final round will begin at 8 AM Tuesday.
Junior Parker Moellinger is currently competing in the Shepherd's Rock Individual on the adjacent Shepherd's Rock Course. Moellinger is tied for 10th at 3-over par with 18 holes remaining.
