WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — Junior Quin Polin drained a 20-foot birdie putt on his final hole of the day to complete a 36-hole Spiders comeback Tuesday in the final round of the Metropolis Intercollegiate. With Polin's putt, the Spiders, who were tied for seventh in the 15-team field after a 17-over par 297 in Round 1, caught North Dakota State at 27-over par (867), ensuring both teams a share of the title at the season-opening event.
"I wasn't sure," said Polin when asked if he was aware of the stakes before he hit his final putt. "I knew we were tied going into the hole, and I was just trying to beat my NDSU guy. I knew if I made it we would have a good shot."
Polin's final birdie also moved him into a tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard at 6-over par (216), matching the best finish of his collegiate career.
"We didn't play our best, but we kept our heads on straight and knew pars were good," said Polin, who made 41 pars, four more than any other golfer in the field.
Richmond combined for an 8-over 288 in Round 3 Tuesday, five shots better than any other team in the field. It was enough to pass 36-hole leader Siena and just enough to catch North Dakota State, which started the day in second place, five shots in front of UR.
"It was a nice way to start the year," said Spiders coach Adam Decker. "The golf course was awesome and played extremely difficult. The guys played solid after a rough start in Round 1. We talked about not trying to do too much in the final round. The wind was going to be up and the hole locations were very tough. The guys did a nice job staying patient and staying present."
Richmond and North Dakota State were officially named co-champions of the event, with NDSU earning the right to take home the first-place trophy by virtue of a better score from their final individual player in Round 3.
Sophomore Carson Baez registered his fourth career top-10 finish, shooting a 1-over 71 for the second consecutive round to finish tied for 10th at 8-over par (218). Baez played the par 5s at Metropolis Country Club in 2-under par during the event, tied for the best of any golfer in the field.
Freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron was one shot back at 9-over par, tied for 14th. "Shout out to [Rizo-Patron] for really helping the team with some steady play. His 2-under 68 in Round 2 was a big spark for the team," said Decker. "It was a great start to his college golf career and he learned a ton this week."
Junior Jack LaPiana tied for 24th at 13-over par after shooting a 2-over 72 Tuesday to move up 19 spots on the individual leaderboard. Senior Drew Carlin was one shot back in a tie for 27th place after recording 10 birdies during the event, tied for third most in the field.
Competing as an individual, junior Parker Moellinger registered his first top-30 finish, tying for 30th at 15-over par (225).
Up next for the Spiders is the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational in Farmington, Pa. on Sept. 29-30.
"As long as we stay patient we will have a great chance," said Polin of the potential for Spiders this season.
