FARMINGTON, Pa. — A career round from junior Jack LaPiana paced the Spiders on the final day of the Nemacolin Collegiate Invitational Tuesday at Mystic Rock Golf Course. LaPiana fired a 6-under 66, equaling the fifth-lowest round in program history, as Richmond moved up into eighth place on the final 19-team leaderboard at 3-over par (867).
"It was a good fight from the guys today," said coach Adam Decker. "We were disappointed with the day yesterday and talked about playing the par 5s better and also the importance of not waiting for the result to be confident."
After playing the par 5s in 2-over par in the first two rounds Monday, Richmond combined to play those same holes in 7-under par Tuesday.
Among the 11 teams to finish below the Spiders on the leaderboard were all five of Richmond's Atlantic 10 rivals in the field: George Mason (+4), George Washington (+6), VCU (+14), and Davidson (+25).
LaPiana's 6-under 66, the lowest round by a Spider in all of 2025, moved him into a tie for sixth place at 6-under par (210), equaling the lowest tournament score of his three-year career. It was also LaPiana's first career top-10 finish, coming in his 17th career event.
"! I felt like I took advantage of the good shots that I hit early in the round and then was able to stay patient and wait for something to happen towards the end of the round, and thankfully I was able to make something happen," said LaPiana, referring to his eagle on the 545-yard 8th hole, his 53rd hole of the tournament. "The eagle I made was off of a 4 iron from 230. I was just trying to put it in the center of the green but ended up pulling it just a little and it went to about 6 feet, and I was able to make the putt which was nice."
"It was a great job by Jack today," added Decker. "This is the kind of golf he's been playing at home. He can take lot of good feelings from this event and build on it moving forward."
Sophomore Carson Baez registered his fourth straight top-20 finish going back to last season, tying for 19th place at 2-under par (214).
Senior Drew Carlin tied for 51st at 5-over par (221), while freshman Lucas Rizo-Patron (tied for 69th at 9-over par) and junior Quin Polin (tied for 72nd at 10-over par) rounded out the Richmond lineup.
Junior Parker Moellinger wrapped up play in the Shepherd's Rock Individual Tuesday, also at Nemacolin Resort, with a career-best 4-under 68, his first collegiate round under par
"I hit the ball really well all day and my putter finally heated up on the back nine," explained Moellinger, who birdied four of his final six holes. He finished the event in eighth place at 1-under par (215) for his first career top-10 finish.
Richmond will return to action in two weeks at the Bash in the Boro in Statesboro, Ga. on Oct. 13-14.
