No. 3 Spiders Advance to A-10 Semifinals with Win Over No. 6 La Salle

HENRICO, Va. – The No. 3-seeded University of Richmond women's basketball team advanced to the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals on Friday night with a 70-51 win over No. 6 seed La Salle at the Henrico Sports & Events Center. With the win, the Spiders improve to 26-6 overall and reach the A-10 semifinals for the fourth straight season, while the Explorers close the year at 18-13.

How It Happened
Rachel Ullstrom opened the scoring for the Spiders with a layup before Ally Sweeney turned a steal into a fast-break basket to make it 4-0. After La Salle got on the board at the line, Sam Dewey buried a transition three and Sweeney added back-to-back layups off Explorer turnovers to cap an 8-0 Richmond run and push the lead to 12-1 at the 5:31 mark. La Salle answered with an 8-2 stretch to trim the deficit to 14-9, but Tierra Simon and Ullstrom each converted inside to keep the Spiders in control. Richmond took an 18-12 lead into the second quarter.
Maggie Doogan opened the second quarter with an and-one play, then Sweeney added two free throws to stretch the lead to 23-12. After La Salle cut the margin to nine, Doogan answered with a layup and later knocked down a transition three to make it 28-16. The Spiders continued to build the lead from there, getting a free throw from Aneisha Scott, a three from Simon and late layups from Ava Persichetti and Rayne Wright. Richmond closed the half on a 10-2 run and carried a 41-21 lead into the locker room.
La Salle opened the third quarter on a 7-0 run, using second-chance points to cut the deficit to 41-28. Doogan halted the momentum with a jumper at the 5:46 mark, then Persichetti knocked down a three and Ullstrom added a layup to stretch the advantage back to 18, 48-30. The Explorers got as close as 15 later in the period, but Wright converted a three-point play with 18 seconds left to send Richmond into the fourth quarter ahead 53-35.
Richmond pushed its lead to 21 early in the fourth after a flagrant foul on La Salle led to three made free throws, two from Simon and one from Scott, making it 56-35 with 8:16 to play. The Explorers later used an 8-0 run to cut the deficit to 64-51 with 1:43 remaining, but Simon answered with two free throws and Dewey followed with a pair from the line to steady the Spiders. Wright added a late transition layup off a steal in the final minute to seal the quarterfinal victory, 70-51.

Richmond returns to action Saturday in the Atlantic 10 Championship semifinals against No. 2 seed George Mason. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. at the Henrico Sports & Events Center, with the game nationally broadcast on CBS Sports Network.
