RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond men's tennis team opened Atlantic 10 Conference play with a 5-2 loss to VCU on Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. The setback moved the Spiders to 0-3 overall and 0-1 in league play, while the Rams improved to 3-2 on the season and 1-0 in the A-10.

How It Happened

VCU secured the opening doubles point by winning the two completed matches on courts two and one. Nicolo Consonni and Gevorg Mnatsakanyan (VCU) earned a 6-3 win over Paxton Pritchard and Sam Rathmanner on court two before Erwann Bouchet and Mats Bredschneider (VCU) defeated Cole Brashear and Davis Wiley, 6-3, at No. 1. The No. 3 doubles match between Kostiantyn Mantach and Leon Zaorski and Richmond's Charlie Burdell and Otto Sewell was left unfinished with VCU leading 5-4.

In singles play, Gevorg Mnatsakanyan (VCU) extended the Rams' lead with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Otto Sewell on court four before Richmond answered on court three, where Charlie Burdell earned a straight-set win over Leon Zaorski (VCU), 6-4, 6-1.

VCU then picked up wins on courts two and one as Erwann Bouchet (VCU) defeated Paxton Pritchard, 7-6(2), 6-4, and Nicolo Consonni (VCU) rallied past Davis Wiley, 2-6, 7-6(2), 6-4. Kostiantyn Mantach (VCU) clinched the match on court six with a 6-2, 5-7, 10-6 win over Sam Rathmanner.

Cole Brashear closed the match with Richmond's second point, earning a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory against Patrik Petera (VCU) on court five.
