Spiders Hand George Mason First A-10 Loss in Key Conference Home Win

Milestone nights from Doogan, Ullstrom power Richmond past Patriots
RICHMOND, Va. – Maggie Doogan recorded her 100th career game in double figures and finished with 20 points to pace the Spiders as the University of Richmond women's basketball team handed George Mason its first Atlantic 10 Conference loss of the season with a 71-57 win Saturday night inside the Robins Center in the Breast Cancer Awareness game presented by Joyner Fine Properties. With the win, Richmond improved to 20-4 overall and 10-1 in league play, while the Patriots fell to 15-7 overall and 10-1 in A-10 action. The victory also pushed Richmond's home conference win streak to 30 straight games inside the Robins Center.

How It Happened
Maggie Doogan opened the scoring with a triple, and Rachel Ullstrom quickly followed with a layup to give Richmond an early 5-0 edge. George Mason answered with a three of its own before Ally Sweeney added to her scoring total to keep the Spiders in front, 7-2. After exchanging triples, Mason's Zahirah Walton scored five points and the Patriots added two free throws to take a 12-10 lead at the 3:20 mark. Ullstrom tied the game with a layup, but Mason responded immediately. A Sam Dewey layup briefly cut the deficit before the Patriots closed the quarter with back-to-back layups to take an 18-14 lead into the second period.
George Mason extended its lead to six early in the second quarter before Sweeney scored inside to cut the margin to four. After the Patriots rebuilt their advantage, Tierra Simon knocked down a three pointer and Doogan followed with a layup to pull Richmond within one, 22-21. Mason answered with a jumper, but Sweeney tied the game again at 24 with a triple. A 4-0 spurt gave the Patriots a four-point edge with just over a minute remaining before another Sweeney three made it a one point game, 28-27. Ullstrom split a pair at the line to send the teams into the locker room tied at 28.
The Patriots scored on their opening possession of the second half before Sweeney responded with a jumper to keep the game tied at 30. Doogan then sparked a 7-0 Richmond run to give the Spiders a 37-30 advantage. Mason ended its scoring drought with a triple at the 5:24 mark, but Dewey answered with a three pointer on the other end, igniting an 11-0 run that included baskets from Ullstrom, Sweeney, Rayne Wright and Doogan. Richmond built its lead to 48-33 before the Patriots trimmed the margin to 10, 50-40, with an and one play heading into the final quarter.
George Mason opened the fourth on the offensive end, cutting the lead to four, 50-46. Alicia Newell ended the Richmond drought with a layup, and Doogan followed with one of her own to push the lead back to eight. After exchanging baskets, Ullstrom and Doogan connected on back-to-back triples around a Mason layup to make it 62-52 with 4:25 remaining. Ullstrom then completed an and-one play, and Doogan added another layup to extend the cushion to 15. The Patriots added a late three and jumper, but Doogan went 4 for 4 at the free throw line down the stretch to seal the 71-57 win.
