Spiders Drop Crosstown Match to VCU

RICHMOND, Va. – The University of Richmond women's tennis team fell to VCU 4-1 Friday afternoon at the Thalhimer Tennis Center. With the result, the Spiders move to 4-9 on the spring season and 0-1 in Atlantic 10 Conference play while the Rams improve to 9-8 and 2-0 in conference play.
How It Happened
VCU opened the afternoon by securing the doubles point with wins on courts three and two. Sara Alba and Viktoria Lackova earned a 6-1 victory over Beatriz Guerra and Elizabeth Novak on court three before Andrea Magallanes and Sofia Jane Thorne defeated Lainey O'Neil and Lucy Webber 6-4 on court two to clinch the point. The top court pairing of Sofia Barbulescu and Abby Lee trailed 5-3 when the match went unfinished.
The Rams carried that momentum into singles play, striking first on court two as Tan Andrade Sabando defeated Elizabeth Novak 6-1, 6-0 to extend the lead to 2-0.
Richmond answered on court four, where Abby Lee delivered a strong performance with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Viktoria Lackova to cut the deficit to 2-1. The victory marked Lee's fifth singles win of the spring and continued her steady play in the middle of the lineup.
VCU regained control with a win on court three as Mariam Ibrahim earned a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Lucy Webber to push the lead to 3-1. Moments later, Andrea Magallanes clinched the match on court five with a 7-6 (7-1), 6-2 win over Lainey O'Neil.
Two matches went unfinished as play was halted following the clinch. On court one, Sofia Barbulescu led 7-5 in the opening set before Sofia Jane Thorne rallied to take the second set and led 3-2 in the third set before the match was stopped. On court six, Beatriz Guerra battled back after dropping the first set, winning a tight second-set tiebreak 9-7 and leading in the third before play was halted
